It has to do with the destruction of the red cells of the blood. It enlarges with some diseases of the liver and it enlarges enormously in cases of leuki mia. There is a form of ane Alvarez mia which can be greatly helped by the surgical removal of the spleen. Some people are worried when, after an automobile acci dent in which their spleen was torn, the pieces had to be re moved surgically; but so far as I know, they are not likely ever to miss the organ. Sometimes, small accessory spleens in the abdomen will enlarge and take over some of the functions of the main organ. Impotence After my article on impotence in the Header's Digest a number, of women wrote angrily to say that the trobule should all be blamed on the husband. But now I'm getting letters from men who tell an unhappy story, and one that I am sure is true. Here is a man of 50 who says he still has as much desire for loving as he ever did. Thirty years ago he married a beautiful woman who turned out to be completely cold and unresponsive and frigid. For years, the husband showed her every affection he could, trying to win her over; but after years of failure he gave up and stayed in his own room. Now, as some times happens to a woman in her forties, the wife is beginning to complain that she wants affec tion. She blames her husband, saying that he should have kept up his attentions until he finally won out. She complains that she no longer gets even a good-night kiss. Now she wants a sex life and wonders why her husband cannot get interested. Would Not Answer Problem As the husband says, there were many times in years past when he thought of going out and hunting up some other wom an, but he realized that this would not be a good answer to his problem, and so never slip ped from grace. Like most fine men, he did not want just sexual gratification; he wanted a loving and affectionate and merry com panion. As a physician I do not blame this man's' wife. For one thing, not having talked to her and perhaps to members of her fam- Southwest Coastal Area Without Power Eugene (U.R) Apower fail ure at Bonneville Power's Maple ton sub-station cut off electric service in much of the southwest Oregon coast area for more than an hour Monday. ' The power was cut off at 12:47 yesterday when the equipment failed at the non-manned station. Arrangements were made with the California Oregon Power company to supply power for the area. Power was brought into the Gold Beach area an hour after the failure and the rest of the area was receiving power two hours later. If your hair isn't becoming to you . . . Mayo Clinic Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Mayo Foundation ily, I haven't the facts I need. Perhaps she was foolish and ig norant enough to marry " a man she not only did not love but did not like. Perhaps she inherited from some psychotic ancestor a "touch-me-not" schizoid make up. Or, perhaps she is just so selfish that she would never put herself out in the least to be kind to her husband. Lack of affection in women can run in a family. I remember er so well as a married woman of 40 who came to me, saying that if she was not soon helped to be. affectionate and respon sive she was going to lose her husband. Later, she told me that her two sisters were as frigid as she. They had both been di vorced because of this curse. Even more remarkable, after 40 years of a largely celibate life, the woman's father had left the unloving mother. Expert To Study Water Content of Coos Sand Dunes Coos Bay (U.ft) The Pacific Power and Light Co. has decided to hire an international water project expert to determine whether it will be feasible to extract the fresh water beneath the sand dunes near Coos Bay. For the past ' two years the PP&L has sunk pipes through the dunes into a source of water which they believe can supply one million gallons of water a day. Pilot surveys have shown that there is definitely fresh water beneath the dunes. To Import Dutch Engineer The PP&L will bring in C. Biemond, director of the Am sterdam, Holland, water works, where sand dunes supply water for three cities. The Dutch have been extracting fresh water from sand dunes for more than a 100 years. The power company engineers for the last two years have been making studies over an area of some 13,000 acres which stretch es between Jordan lake and Ten Mile creek, north of here. They believe the water comes from the 65 inches rainfall in the area and from the 70 inches of rain fall in the hills east of the area. Geologists explained that the sand-dunes supply "which is be low sea-level, is kept from con tamination by the salt water by the greater pressure of the underground water. More Than Portland Supply The water supply beneath the sand dunes is more than half of the daily capacity that is cur rently supplying the city of Port land, Ore. At stake in the water search is a pulp production industry which is estimated to bring $6 million annual in payroll to the area. Coos Bay does not have a firm supply of water in the summer in spite of its high an nual rainfall. Geologists also believe that there are other sand dunes along the Oregon coast which might yield fresh water. 15 No. Central BEVERLY'S TV & RADIO Phone 2-9001 634 Crater Lake Ave. Service Calls $3.50 Open Sunday Through Friday My own shop 8 rears near Port- lend Repairing All Makes rBOfESSIOmi TOWNE BEAUTY SHOPPE Ph. 2-4266 7 KoKo Says: Mother, if you have e dress shoe fitting problem, we think we can solve it with this patent lip-on!
