The Comets of Crater go to Grants Pass on Friday while the Black Trnado of Medford enter tains the Klamath Falls Pelicans in two games on Saturday after noon. Peery got two hits in two times up for Medford. Dick Mc Laughlin fanned four batters and walked three in three innings of pitching for the Tornado. Wayne Allen of Crater whiffed three and walked two over the route. Five runs in the fourth inning made the difference for GP in the loop fray with Ashland. AAU Opens Nat Meet in Florida Daytona Beach, Fla. (U.R) The 1957 men's National AAU swimming and diving champion ships were got underway today with Olympic champion George Breen, a two-time winner last year at Yale, defending his 1,500 meter freestyle title in the open ing event. Breen, now an unattached en try from Cortland, N. Y., and some 20 other long-distance swimmers were to compete with the clock in three heats begin ning at 3 p.m. The 1,500-meter event was to be the first of 13 scheduled for the next four days in the 25- yard-long, municipally - owned eWelch Pool. The two diving events, slated for Thursday and Saturday, will be held at a circu lar pool in the same area. Orlando Zulueta Choice in Bout Washington (U.R) Cuban Orlando Zulueta is an 8-5 favor ite to win his third fight in less than a month tonight against Joey Lopes in a nationally-tele vised 10-round lightweight bout at Capitol Arena here. Zulueta, fourth-ranked light weight contender, will seek a title fight against 135-pound champion Joe Brown if he wins tonight, according to the Cuban's, trainer, Freddy Fierro. Zulueta never has been stopped in 100 pro fights. He has won 62, lost 27. The rest were draws. Zulueta is a substitute for Paoli Rosi, eighth-ranked light weight, who had to pull out of the fight after he injured his hand while training. Wrestl ers Begin AAU Tournament Waynesbure, Pa. (U.R) Three-time NCAA champion Dan Hcydge, of Oklahoma, undefeated in 46 intercollegiate bouts, tries for his second straight "grand slam" of wrestling today in the opening of the AAU championships. The four-day tournament, con sidered the World Series of Ama teur wrestling, features upwards of 200 grapplers. The star-studded field includes collegiate and high school titleholders arid in dependent amateurs from the United States, Canada, Mexico, India and Japan. Champions will be crowned in eight weight classes, 114 pounds to heavyweight, in free style and Greco-Roman divisions. Greco- Roman allows no holds below the waist. MEDF0RD!,TRIBUNE sipaDmirs jjf - ' ' RELAY PERFORMER Mike Russell, above, is expected to be one of Medford high's leading performers Saturday in the annual Rogue Valley relay track meet at the Medford stadium. Russell's specialty "is the quarter-mile in which he won the district cham pionship and took third in the state meet last year. The Black Tor nado will be host Saturday to defending champion Grants Pass and to Marshfield, Klamath Falls, Ashland and Crater. Relay meets are regarded as the most colorful of track and field compe tions because of their livelier action. Of the 12 events of the Rogue meet all but the discus, pole vault and javelin will be relays. Other events will be quarter-mile, half-mile, mile and two-mile relays, the distance medley, the shuttle hurdles and the shot put, broad jump and high jump relays. A school can pick up only one place in each event. The shuttles and field event relays will have three men on each team and the flat races will have four man crews. Grants Pass and Medford cindermen rank as favorites. 10 Southern Oregon Collegians Gain Varsity Basketball Awards Ashland Ten basketball players from this year's Oregon collegiate conference second place Southern Oregon college Red Raiders squad have earned varsity letter according to Coach Ted Schopf. Eight of the 10 will be back next year. Only Dale Bates and Don Lowrance will be lost through graduation. Bates, a four year letterman, was SOCs team captain and floor leader. He finished second to teammate Norman Oliva for the OCC field goal average leadership with .460, and was the third leading scorer for the Raiders with 248 points. Don Lowrance, 6-4, re serve center, also earned his SOC INDIVIDUAL SCORING: G NORMAN OLIVA 28 BILL HOLLINGSWORTH.. 20 DALE BATES 28 CHUCK CRANUALL 25 fourth varsity award, a blanket with the varsity "O" in its cen ter. Players getting their third award were Bill Hollingsworth, second leading scorer, and Charlie Crandall, sharpshooting free throw expert who led the team with a .789 average. Ted Tenney was the only Raider to earn a second year award. Norman Oliva, SOC's first string all-conference forward, leading scorer, top rebounder and leading field goal percentage leader in the OCC at .473, head ed the list of five SOC hoop-' ters. The others were Dave D' Olivo, Ron Owings, Jim Mc Abee and John Foust. Dis trict Court Judge Joseph McGar raghy has refused to dismiss a 8500,000 suit filed by Sportscas ter Harry Wismer against George Preston Marshall and the Washington Redskins profession al football team. McGarraghy re j e c t e d two technical motions on Tuesday which would have meant dis missal of the case. Wismer, who filed the suit a few week ago, is a minority stockholder ol the Redskins.
