For four years Teleme ter, the best known pay TV . i Aim M.ubv sysiem ownea mostly by Paramount Studio, has failed to become a practical reality. The Federal Communi cations Commission, swamped with arguments against pay TV from television networks, has taken no action yet on the sub ject. Even a try in Palm Springs by Telemeter to operate on a closed circuit, requiring no FCC approval, flopped because stu dios refused to -send first-run films. A TV-Film Merger On the theory of if-you-can't-lick-'em-join 'em, Telemeter has announced it is joining forces with moviet theaters. Telemeter now is ready to operate on a closed circuit system, not re quiring FCC approval, with movie theaters piping their first run films into home TV sets. Telemeter executives feel this solves the problem of getting first-run movies and also elim inates the vigorous objections of theater men who thought they'd be edged out of business. One theater chain represent ing 1.000 theaters has contacted Telemeter about getting fran chises. An Oklahoma City thea ter chain already has launched a sideline to send its movies into homes without even the benefit of the Telemeter coin box. "We hope the FCC will give some affirmative action for a Telemeter trial soon," says Lou Novins, one of the Telemeter executives. "But as that might take a year or two to go into Br AUNf MOSBT United Prew Correspondent effect we are going ahead with this project that does not require FCC approval. We are now in business." Via Telemeter's new system, the home customer has a coin box atop his set with slots for coins and a gadget for keeping track of his credit if he can't put in the correct change. A recorded voice announes what is playing on the pay TV chan nel or channels. The films would be trans mitted from a studio in the movie theater. The theater still would be open for regular pa trons. Possible Installation Charge Installation of Telemeter boxes would be free or cost around 510, depending on what the thea ter decides to charge. "Vested interests have opposed our project," Novins says. "But there have been changes in both television and movies that have brought pay TV closer to opera tion." Telemeter spokesmen point out that with TV production costs mounting, sponsors cannot offer the top shows that pay TV could. However, the networks long have argued that their first-rate programs would keep the home viewer from dropping any coins in a box to pay for his entertainment. Daily -9:30 to 5:30 p.m. LISTEN TO THE WOOLWORTH HOUR Every Sunday 1 to 2 P.M. - STATION KYJC t9 NORTH CENTRAL AVENUE MEDFORD, OREGON By EDNA KING MANDEVILLE Are you one of those busy people who loves flowers but 'simply does not have time for a flower garden?" If you are, perhaps I can be of help to you. I've outlined a weekly schedule of suggestions showing how to grow an abundance of colorful flowers all season long in as little as one hour a week. That's less time than it takes just to get started at. most other forms of recreation, and the rewards caii be far more satisfying. You may, of course, alter this schedule to meet your own routine, but I don't believe it will be necessary to add any tii.ie to that single hour a week. Just one hour is enough to give you all the pleasures and .the unmeasurable satisfaction of growing your own flowers. First Week: Plan Your Gar den. Your first hour, of course, should cover the actual plotting of your garden, and it can be spent with pad and pencil in the room. You should pick a sunny, well-drained spot for your gar den, and to save time I d sug gest a rectangular garden the first year, with the planting in rows. My schedule allows an hour and a half for spading, so your garden can be as large as 12' by 25'. If this seems a bit too large for your first try, you can start with a smaller size. You'll find it helpful to draw a diagram of the plot and mark off rows about three feet apart, running north and south if pos sible. Then you can spenb the balance of your hour jotting down a list of your favorite flowers. Many Varieties Second Week: Choose Variet ties. Now is the time to take your list to your favorite store where seeds are sold. It really does my heart good to see how many stores have started selling flower seeds in recent years. Al most any of them will no doubt have one large special assort ment of flower seeds only. But if there is more than one brand on sale, I find it wise to buy the brand with the most varieties, so you'll have as many as possible to choose from. Before choosing a flower on your list, look over all the brightly colored seed packets with the different varie ties of that flower. The pictures will help you choose the one or two types that meet your color and size preferences. For example, a really complete assortment will offer you over two dozen petunias to choose from, and at least 30 different zinnias. To me, choosing just the right varieties for my garden is one of the biggest thrills of flower growing. Once you're standing before the colorful dis play you'll find that it's not necessary to confine your choices to the list you ve prepared. It s really fun to try a new or un familiar flower, though if you're a beginner it might be well if you stuck to easy-growing varie ties like calendulas, cosmos. marigold, nasturtium and zinnia. Read Information Do not confine your attention exclusively to the fronts of the seed packets, as attractive and as colorful as they are. The backs of the packets are fully as im portant, if not more so. There you will find valuable informa tion that will help you to decide whether a variety is suitable for your garden. Such features as a map that tells when to plant in your locality and pictures of seedlings that help you "pull the weeds and not the seeds," are helpful and important. Some packets also offer pamphlets of more detailed instructions, that you can send for. Next week I shall conclude this subject of raising flowers in one hour, a week by explaining what to do each week for seven more weeks. Your assignment for the 3rd week is to prepare the soil. Wednesday. March 27. 1957 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE THREE X-Ray Clinic Will Be Open Thursday More than 1,200,000 people in this country have tuberculosis at this moment," Dr. James E. Perkins, managing director of the National Tuberculosis and Health association, said recently. These cases are both active and inactive, and they need either treatment or medical su pervision, he noted. Of these cases 800.000 are inactive: and 400,000 are active, infectious cases, he pointed out. Dr. Perkins estimated that 250,000 of the 400.000 active cases are not under treatment and are exposing others in their communities. Regular annual x-rays are recognized as one of the most effective means of finding un known cases of tuberculosis, he added. A chest x-ray clinic is main tained by the .Jackson County Public Health association for the convenience of county resi dents. Clinic hours are 2 to 5 p.m. every Thursday and 7 to 9 p.m. the first Wednesday eve ning of each month.
