o Korean Christian Radio Ends Two Years on the Air The Christiaa radio station in Seoul ttation HLKY, the "Radio Toica U. the Church in Korea" mm now completed tw years at Woadcasting. A Methodist mkionary, Donald T. Payne, of Imi Junta, Colo., is manager of th station which is operated by an interdenomina tional agency RAVEMCO. Other Protestant church cooper ate in the program. The two years have jeen steady expansion in th oroad casting of this evaneal radio station. Time on te air has in creased in th-two years from 31 to 50 Lirars per week, averag ing oore than two hours each , morning and five each evening. Audience surveys in Seoul indi cate that fully one-third of the radio homes in the capital city prefer HLHY-to all other sta tions. The first one hundred bat tery radios, "Portable Mission aries," are being assembled and will soon be doing duty in as many country churches. Each church will thus become a listen ing center for that village. A iaplain in the RKO army wrote from a frontline base sur rounded by thick woods and hieh mountains: "In the dugouts along the front lines, radio is a more ef fective evangelist than any chap lain. It is our greatest pleasure that even in such a dangerous place (close to the Chinese Com munist army) God's words are to be heard on your station." Station HLKY is a coopera tive project of Korean National Christian Council. Its general program includes regular broad casting of fine music, gospel messages, and drama. New Church Rises in Fairbanks, Alaska The "farthest north Methodist church in America" which be gan its organized life wor shipping in a rented hall from which empty whiskey bottles had to be removed on Sunday mornings, and whose congrega tion thinks nothing of going to church in weather 41 degrees below zero is preparing to ex pand its facilities. With a goal of 43,200 for a new educational unit, the First Methodist church of Fairbanks, Alaska, set to work and in nine days raised $50,013 in cash and pledges for the building. "This we did without a 'pro fessiongl' coming in to help us," says the Rev. A. E. Purivance, minister of the church. A loan of $40,000 from the Division of National Missions of the Meth odist Board of Missions -vill help the church build the educational unit, which, according to Mr Purivance, "may cost in the neighborhood of $90,000. "This seems like a terrific amount to you in the States, but costs are double here over many stateside prices. We will have eight classrooms, two as sembly rooms, rest rooms, and a large furnace room, plus the new furnace which should be sufficient for the main floor we will add later." m The Fairbanks church receiv ed its first members on Sept. 14, 1952, and on the second Sun day of December, 1953, moved from its rented hall into Its new sanctuary. "The hall was used for many purposes," says Mr. Purivance, "which accounts for the whiskey ' bottles, and its atmosphere was far from that of a church but we made the best of it until we were far enough along with our building to move fn. Methodists Puerto Rican Methodists, at their 1957 annual conference ses sion recently, ordained the first woman minister, laid the corner stone for an 580,000 new church and reported gains in member ship, Sunday school enrollment and giving. Together with six men or dained as elders, Mrs. Julia Torres Fernandez was ordained a deacon by Bishop Fred P. Cor son, Philadelphia, the first wom an ordained in the history of Puerto Rican Methodism. A junior high school supervisor in Ponce, Puerto Rico's second larg est city, Mrs. Fernandez has been an active Methodist 30 years, president of the conference Woman's Society of Christian Service and a supply preacher. The new 580,000 church build ing and educational plant will serve an area comprising 7,000 families in three of Sar. Juan's rapidly growing suburbs. Reports show there was a net gain of 400 members from 1955 to 1956 and that membership in the conference is more than 7,000. Enrollment in Methodist Sunday schools last year was about 13,000, an increase of about 5 per cent over 1955 in Puerto Rico. Methodist Youth Group Finances Students Work Oshkosh, Wis. U.R) For the past five years members of the Methodist Youth Fellowship of the First Methodist church here have been financing the studies of a medical student in the Philippines. The youths raised $600 a year for the Filipino student by stag ing benefit plays, church sup pers and other activities. Recently the youths got a first hand look at the man they helped put through school. Dr. Ricardo Fernando, now a 28-year-old physician, visited his young benefactors here. He is now takiie post-graduate medi cal work at Harvard Medical School and serving at a Boston hospital. ADVENT CHRISTIAN CHVRCH West Jackson and Welch sts., near Holly st. Rev. G. E.
