SPORTSI Tar Heels, Jayhawks Favorites In NCAA Hoop Semi-Final Tilts BOWLING MINOR LEAGUE By taking 34 points from Matlack's, Lininger's Rockettes held the lead in the Minor Bowl ing league this week. Lucy Tur ner had high game with 230 and Virginia Wilson had high series with 519. Other high series were by Audry Mitcheltree 510. Ethel Cood 486, Lucy Turner 473. U.P. North Carolina's No. 1 rated Tar Heels and the University of Kansas to day were installed as favorites by oddsmakers in the NCAA bas ketball championship semi-finals scheduled tonight at Municipal auditorium. The local odds were that North Carolina would top Michi gan State by five points in the first game beginning at 5:30 (PST) and that Kansas, the No. 2 rated team, wojld beat San Francisco by nine points in the second game starting at 7:30 (PST) Should North Carolina and Kansas meet in the national championship Saturday night, the local oddsmakers favored Kansas by two points. , i Competing Teams Arrive The four teams participating in the championships, rated per haps as the finest four teams ever to enter the finals, arrived here Thursday and held work outs at the auditorium. To offset a ticket squeeze, of ficials announced that tonight's first game would be telecast in 1368 rortn Carolina and possiDly Michigan. The championship game Saturday night is to be telecast regionally, and possibly to other areas of the nation if lo cal TV stations decide to join the hookup All four coaches pronounced their teams raring to go and Fordy Anderson of Michigan State said in so many words that i"" hie foam I ho Tinner Iva svor coached," was going to win the championship Dick Harp of Kansas heard the words, and those of the other coaches, and kept on saying, "Somebody has to face Wilt Chamberlain before they win the championship. San Francisco likes to slow it down with defensive strategy. Harp doesn't especially care what typ of a game is played, as long as Kansas con trols the tempo. Kansas' two losses this season came when Iowa State and Oklahoma A&M were able to set the pattern of play. Tar Heels Ready Frank McGuire of North Caro lina said his boys "are relaxed and ready to win these final two games." McGuire said the Tar Heels "will play exactly the opposite offense of Michigan State." Since Michigan State plays only one brand of ball, the fast break, it appeared that North Carolina would try to slow it down. The battle between San Fran- Memphis To Take On Bradley in NIT Final New York (U.R) So now this upset-happy National Invita tion Basketball tourney comes to a showdown between Bradley, team that's "tearin" the joint apart," and Memphis State, a dashing dark-horse that has sur prised three straight times. That's the hard-to-pick lineup for Saturday's nationally-televised finale at 2 p.m. EST in Madison Square Garden a pair ing produced by eight upsets out of 10 preliminary games. Bradley became only the sec ond favorite to win a game in On-Time Ring Titlist Dies Salt Lake City (U.R) Ira Dern, 63, who once held the na tion's middleweight and light heavyweight wrestling cham pionships, died in a hospital here Thursday night of a kidney failure. Dern won the middleweight title in Boston in 1819. He re linquished the title after seven years, then won the light heavy weight title in Columbus, Ohio. Born July 15, 1893, 'in Hooper Neb., Dern had lived in Utah since the age of five. the whole carnival Thursday night when it romped to a 94-66 victory over Temple in a semi final. In the other. Bob Swan der's one-hander with three sec onds left in overtime gave Mem phis State a 80-78 decision over St. Bonaventure in the tourney's most exciting game to date. Another Shot "I kind of like Bradley in the final," said defeated Coach Har ry Litwack of Temple, and it appeared that the hot-shooting Braves from Peoria, 111., will be favored over the Tennessee Ti gers by game time. That means that Bradley will be getting another shot at the title it narrowly missed in 1950, when it was beaten by CCNY's "double champions" in the fi nale, 69-61 the same year it lost to the same team in the NCAA final. It also means that Memphis State gets an amazing chance to grab the gold ring on its first ride on the merry-go-round, its first appearance in the NIT. And oddly enough, the final matches the team coached this year by Bob Vanatta Memphis State, with the team he coached last year a situation unprece dented in a major tournament. Baseball Heads Discuss Ways To Fight Bills Bellair, Fla. (U.R) Profes sional baseball officials, put on the spot by a case involving foot ball, meet today to decide how to fight pending congressional bills which would place the sport under federal anti-trust laws. Representatives of the 16 major league clubs will meet with Commissioner Ford Frick. President Will Harridge of the American league, President War ren Giles of the National league and George Trautman, president of the minor leagues, also will attend the closed meeting. Ed Bingham Gets Letter Eugene (U.R) Eleven mem bers of the 1957 University of Oregon basketball team were nominated for varsity letters by Coach Steve Belko. sThey include Phil McHugh of Portland and Ed Bingham, Med- ford, who won letters for the third years. Others named were Bill Moore and John Lundell of The Dalles, Hal Duffy of Portland, Wimp Hastings of Bandon, Charlie Franklin of Los Angeles, Paul Tuchardt of Oakridge, Dick Val entine of Los Angeles, Bud Kuy kendall of Eugene and Eli Mor gan of Portland. JAIL CLOSES, NO BUSINESS San Marino, Calif. (U.R) The city closed its jail today because of lack of business. Police Chief Robert Seares said the city, which has no bars or theaters, temporarily held only 144 pris oners in the two-cell jail last year most of them drunks. Friday.
