The Nationalsit Chinese Presi dent told United Press in an ex clusive interview that any ease up on the embargo "would be helping the Chinese Communists pull their chestnuts out of the fire." Peace Rumors Groundless Chiang termed Communist peace rumors "groundless" and denied Red Chinese Premier Chou Enlai's charge that the United States has turned For mosa into a dependency. "Their (the Communist) idea is to arouse anti-American feelings among Chinese on the main land," Chiang said. He said Communist China "is PORTLAND LIVESTOCK Portland lUPi Cattle 100. They ;are just now beginning to feel the ! effects of the embargo that be gan aunng the Korean war." Chiang hoped that President Eisenhower and British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, meeting at Bermuda, would re alize "that any relations now would undo all that we have accomplished in six years of the embargo." Britain's desire to relax the ban and promote trade with Red China is one of the points which Macmillan reportedly wants to discuss with Mr. Eisenhower. But Chiang said if the Western powers do this "it will help the Communists to survive. They will be playing into the Com munists' hands and will be help ing to defeat themselves." Ashland to Seek Another Interchange Ashland Ashland city coun cil members and Chamber of Commerce directors this week agreed that the state highway commission should be asked to make an additional access road available to Ashland when the Highway 99 freeway is con structed. The groups also favored widening Siskiyou boulevard to four lanes from the fire station to Highway 66. The request for another access road to the freeway will be for warded to the highway commis sion at its March 29 meeting in roruana. Present plans call for the new highway to bypass Ashland with interchanges at Crowson rd. and Valley View and at High way 66 intersection. Councilmen and Chamber directors believe an access to the downtown area should be provided from the new freeway and that such an access road might be at the point where Oak st. would tie in with the new Highway 99.
