By contrast, a drag strip near
Denver, Colo., is being built by
the county commission with pub
lic funds. At the same time, an
ordinance expressly forbidding
drag racing on city streets is
expected to be passed by the
city council.
Cleveland safety director John
McCormick banned drag racing
on any city streets. He said the
city has a duty to protect its
citizens.
"We can't allow racing on one
street and arrest motorists for
speeding on another," he said.
Two strips are contemplated
for the Seattle, Wash., area and
there are several in existence
throughout the state. Events us
ually are sponsored by the West
Washington Timing Association,
which requires that participants
be insured.
But the Automobile Club of
Washing said it is "not sure we
stand behind it anymore. It does
not generate the right safety at
titude. Kids and in some cases
adults are carrying drag racing
from the strips to the highways."

Defends Testimony

Morgan, former state Demo
cratic chairman and now state
public utilities commissioners,
Monday defended his testimony
before the Senate Labor Rackets
committee and declined to alter
or expand upon it.
In a wire to Sen. John McClel
lan, chairman of the committee,
Morgan said:
"There is no occasion for me
to change any of my testimony
and I shall not do so.
"Nor can I imagine any basis,
other than customary courtesy
to another senator, on which
such instructions were issued by
you."
The committee had asked Mor
gan last week to verify his testi
mony that a gambler had told
him that the Teamsters union
considered the late Gov. Paul
Patterson as "our pigeon."

Overseas Positions
Offered to Women
Miss June Rosenhaupt, special
services representative of the
Department of the Army, will be
in Portland from March 28 until
April 5 to interview women in
terested in overseas government
jobs.
The civilian positions are
being offered to qualified wo
men by the Department of the
Army in the recreation program
for military personnel in Ger
many, France, Italy, Hawaii,
Japan, Korea. Okinawa, Pana
ma, Alaska, and in the United
States.
The positions open include
recreation leader, librarians, and
crafts directors, and require ap
plicants to have a college degree.
Salaries for these positions
range from S3670 to $5440 per
year based on education and ex
perience. Transportation to the
overseas location and housing is
provided. Applicants are con
sidered only for parts of the
world in which they are inter
ested. Appointments with Miss Ros
enhaupt in Portland regarding
these jobs may be made by noti
fying her at the Oregon State
Employment Service, 1437 S.W.

Junior Chamber
Discusses Camp
Policy, organization, donations,
materials and construction plans
for a proposed summer camp
program were discussed Monday
by the summer camp committee
of the Medford Junior Chamber
of Commerce at a meeting in the
Holland hotel.
Committee leaders are Dick
Walsh, chairman; Greg Orr, sec
retary; Al Franzke, treasurer
and materials; John Gustafson,
outside organizations; Garry
Shuler, parent organizations;
Bob Foster, donations; and Don
Carlon and Don Yocum,- con
struction.
Warren Hayse and Orr are in
charge of transportation to the
camp site at the Lake o the
Woods. Working out plans and
policy for the project are Al
Holmes and Bob Shangle.
The Jaycee camp was former
ly a Salvation Army camp. It
was acquired by the group to
accommodate youth groups of
the area that otherwise would
not have access to park facilities,
according to Walsh.

west bank of the Hudson River
in New Jersey and New York,
are said by geologists to be
