She should take a long trip. Mrs. C. K. My husband and I are all upset about our 25-year-old daughter, who recently broke her engagement. Sandra is a nice-looking girl, but has never been popular. A year, ago she met a very fine young man and they became en gaged after a few months. Then Sandra discovered he had been regularly seeing an old flame. She ave back her ring immed iately. She didn't want to hear any explanations and would ac cept no apologies. O I feel she was very wrong. Whatever his reasons for seeing this girl, I am sure this young man was perfectly serious about marrying Sandra. I feel that we ought to put pressure on San dra to try to patch this thing tip because I"m sure she won't find another man as suitable. e Mr. C. K. I don't blame Sandra for breaking this engage ment. If this young man could not be faithful to her through their engagement, what could she expect in the future? I am just as concerned about Sandra's future as my wife, but I am in favor of a different course. Sandra has become much too independent since the break up of this affair. She says she's going to be an old maid, so she has decided to devote herself to her career. She has taken out an endowment policy and is reg- Baby Set QUICK CROCHET! I feel that her concentration on becoming a career woman is very bad. I want to give her a substantial money gift so she can take a good long vacation trip. This will take some of that independence out of her and give her a chance to look around. Th Council: These parents are probably unduly alarmed the remedies they suggest are unlikely to work. Perhaps San dra should have listened to the young man's explanation, but even if she had listened, she would probably not be inclined to accept what he had to say at face value. On the other hand. Mr. C. K. takes Sandra's pledge to be an old maid a little too seriously. Many girls decide on exactly the course of action she has chos en following the breakup of an engagement. It is usually a pret ty healthy sign. The girl tries to mend her hurt by telling herself she is not interested in marriage anyway. She throws herself into activity, she meets new people and within a short time has an entirely fresh out look. The long vacation trip to mend a broken heart seldom works. Vacations leave too much time for brooding. Instead of "looking around." Sandra is more likely to look within and return home feeling life has lit tle that is interesting to offer her. Less anxiety on the part of both parents is called for here. Mr. C. K. ought to hang onto that "substantial sum." He may find it will come in handy as a wedding gift to Sandra in the not-too-far future. (Copyright 1957, General Features Corp.) Sev eral officers were absent. Reports of committees were heard and bills were presented and approved. A favorable ballot was report ed on Mr. and Mrs. Morris Tuck er and an application for mem bership from Mr. and Mrs. Don ald Giles was read. Earl Croft of the agriculture committee reported an abun dance of hay still remaining in the valley in spite of the long cold winter season. Mrs. Croft gave a talk on wild flowers and demonstrated with a picture of lamb-tongues and spoke of how they should be picked without injuring the plants. She encouraged parents to teach children the pleasures they can receive from seeing wild flowers blooming in the woods. Discussions were heard on a way to rid the fence now of poi son ivy and on putting in a new fence around the Grange hall. HEC will meet with Paulene Kelley March 21 with Pearl Farnsworth assisting. The next meeting, held March 28, being the anniversary, will be a potluck dinner followed by an illustrated talk on electricity and fire prevention given by Mr. C. C. Haggard. Anyone interested in this meeting is invited to attend Those coming for dinner are asked to bring a covered dish and their own service. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The Le Vanders and Crofts served refreshments at the close of the meeting. By Jimmy Hatlo 110 Applications Made Under New Law Amendment A total of 110 applications have been received by the Med ford social security office under the recent amendment to the social security law providing for benefit payments to disabled workers 50 years of age or over, according to W. V. Nusbaum, dis trict manager. This is in addition to 530 ap plications to "freeze" wage rec ords, received from disabled persons under age 50. "Freeze" applications have been taken since Jan. 1, 1955. However, ap plications for benefit payments have been accepted only since last October, with payments to start in July. To have his earnings record frozen, or to receive disability payments, the applicant must be so severely disabled that he is unable to engage in any substan tial work, the condition must have existed for at least six months, and it must be expect ed to continue indefinitely, Nus baum pointed out. In addition, the applicant must have had at least five years work under soc ial security, a year and a half of which was in the three year period immediately prior to the start of the disabling condition. Applications filed before June 30 can be made retroactive for only one year with the result that workers who have been dis abled for some time, and who have not worked since Septem ber 1954, will not be able to qualify to have their social se curity records frozen or to be paid disability insurance bene fits at or after age 50. The Medford social security office has received a supply of booklets explaining the disab ility program in detail. Any one wanting a copy may call or write the office. The booklet is entitled "If You Are Dis abled." Display Ignorance who heads their country's gov ernment, officials reported to day. Three conscripts said the Re public of France is ruled by a king. Spes sard L. Holland (D-Fla.) figured today, he'd better turn this one over to the Internal Revenue people. He recived a letter from two Miami, Fla., school teachers complaining because they could not deduct necessary summer courses from their income taxes. "A neighbor of ours is a strip tease dancer," the teachers wrote. "She is allowed to de duct as 'necessary business ex penses' the cost of her false eye lashes and G-strings, while we school teachers .can't deduct the cost of required summer school work." As the man said, "When ignorance is bliss, it is folly to be wise." Anyway, Mai Zetter- ling, the conscientiously glamor ous cinema luminary said recent ly: "women marry because they are insecure in themselves and want someone to protect them, look after them. That's why it is important to them. I'm perfectly fulfilled. I do not need a man to lean on or to protect me. I am a pretty independent person." Hoffbuhr said that as of Sat urday, Fish lake was 1.000 acre feet short of being full, an im provement of about 600 acre feet over the measurement on March 1. There were 12 inches of snow on the ground last Sat urday, compared to none two weeks before. Precipitation for that period totaled 4V inches. At Four Mile lake, snow depth had increased by about two feet, and the lake remained full. Snow measurements still are less than normal, and the sea sonal supply of irrigation water may be less than needed, Hoff buhr said, but the recent storms have made the outlook some what more favorable. Given a few summer rains, irrigationists should get through the season without undue difficulty, he said.
