MERICK Urited Prosi Corraspondont Hong Kong U.R; Recogni tion by the United States is far more important to Communist China than admission to the United Nations. Some Western diplomats, as a matter of fact, are not at all con vinced that Peiping wants mem bership in the UN just yet. Such membership, they theorize, might prove embarrassing at times to the Red regime. To start with, UN member ship would not automatically in sure recognition by the United States. But U.S. recognition al most certainly would result in quick admission to the UN. f urther, admission to the UN mijht not dissolve the National ist regime on Formosa. There tfiils the possibility of 'two X'hinis" sitting in the world Ira big danger to Peiping" r.mralign to gain ideological control over Southeast Asia 11. Reds' foremost aim after Formosa would be that in ny debate in the UN, Commu nist China would have to stand up and be counted. The first step seemed to be aim ed at creating a gulf between Southeast Asian nations and the United States, even at the risk of having Communist elements revised somewhat their plans to ; further suppressed. subvert countries in that area. 1 The reasoning would seem to engage themselves from U.S. in fluence. Communist influence would eventually increase. This '"peaceful" subversion, however, would have been tor pedoed had Red China been 51st Year Medford United Preis F-ull Leased Wire Price 10c Tribune United Press Full Leased Wire Second Section MEDFORD, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13, 1957 8 Pages Growth of Vegetables Discussed at Meeting Cave Junction The swing to ward fruit and vegetable grow ing as a new industry for the Il linois Valley received a con- tsiderable boost Thursday night jthe annua, Linie,d colege Medford Student Vins In Forensic Tourney Salem Lewis Bright, speech j major at Willamette university i from Medford, won the first I place gold trophy in senior men s alter-dinner speaking at in- when Allen Eastgate of Pacific . tercolleeiate forensic tournament Fruit and Produce company I o; champions recently, spoke before the local Grange at j Bright, a junior, also won Brid-cview third place citation in impromp- " . ,. . .to speaking. Willamette's debating team was eligible to represent the Pacific Northwest in the U.S. Military academy invitational debate tournament at West Point next month. The Willamette team declined the invitation because the men were unable to make the trip, it was reported. Willamette has been named representative to the West Point tournament four out of the last five years. RADAR BOOST Sidney, Neb. (U.P.) Motorists may argue that the use of radar in tracking down speeders is un fair, but the Cheyenne County Treasurer approves. Court re cords show that for the first 10 months' of 1956, fines totaled $21,501.25, compared to the en tire 1955 total of $18,732.40 Radar Was not used during 1955. be that once Asian countries dis- obliged to stand up in the UN and vote with Russia against any condemnation of Soviet' in tervention in Europe. To Asian nations, such an act would have been a declaration of Peiping's willingness to dupli cate such intervention in the Far East if similar conditions exist ed for example, in Thailand's recent crisis, or in Indonesia or South Vietnam. A Picture of Martyrdom As long as Red China is bar red from the United Nations, Peiping's propagandists can create a picture of martyrdom which can draw sympathy from neutral countries. However, if the UN should vote to seat Peiping in place of the Nationalists, the Communists naturally would jump at the chance, for this would scuttle Taipei's influence in Southeast Asia among overseas Chinese. But if there were two Chinas, then Peiping's reaction likely would be different. .Peiping may be thinking, how ever, that without U.S. recogni tion, it is doubtful, at least for the time being, of the National ists being excluded from the world organization. Summed up, informed diplo mats believe, the lack of U.S. recognition and UN membership has not hurt Peiping too much. In some ways, it has been a help.
