If Philadel phia and New York wind up tied for third place then they'll meet either Thursday or Friday night at Philadelphia to determine the division's third playoff team. In the Western Division it's mostly a battle for position. St. Louis currently is in first place, one game in front of Fort Wayne and Minneapolis, but after to night's action the three could wind up tied for first place. The Lakers, last a couple of weeks ago, moved into the tie for second by defeating the War riors, 100-94, Tuesday night in the only game played. Waltonians Opp ibse Fast Boating Bill The Jackson county chapter of the Izaak Walton league at a meeting earlier this week passed a resolution opposing Senate Bill 103, which would increase boat speeds on Diamond lake. Copies of the resolution will be forwarded to Jackson county's three legislators at Salem for inforrfiational purposes. Coffman. Coffman said Engle, a mem ber of the last two East coaching staffs, would be assisted by Blan ton Collier of Kentucky and Milt Bruhn of Wisconsin. The West staff of Jack Cur tice, Utah; Tommy Prothro, Oregon State, and Sam Boyd, Baylor, was named several weeks ago. The 33rd shrine game will be played here Dec. 28th. BOYER SIGNS Pasadena. -.Calif. (U.R) Righthander Cloyd Boyer ended his holdout seige with the Sac ramento Solons Tuesday and the club told first sacker Nippy Jones it had given him its last offer. On the holdout list along with Jones are infielder Harry Bright, outfielder Al Heisvt and pitcher Rex Jones. FORTE 'PLAYER OF YEAR' brilliant seven-foot University of Kansas sophomore, who had 51 votes. Six-five Grady Wallace of South Carolina, the national scoring leader, was third with 35 votes. The selection of Forte, Ivy League scoring champion, came at the end of a surprising cam paign in which he fought right down to the wire with four physi cal giants for the national scor ing championship. He finished with an average of 28.92 points per game and awaited the re sults of other scoring contenders in post-season tournaments to learn his final standing. Falls, 36 To 31 Eugana UR Marshfield upset Klamath Falls 36-31 In a first-round state A-l high school tournament game today to move into tha quarter-finals, Tha underdog Pirates used a deliberate offense against the Klamath Falls xona defense, slowing down the play when they got ahead. There was no scoring in the first four minutes of the second quarter and for the first five minutes and 40 seconds of the final quarter. Roger Johnson, an all-itaier last season, led Marshfield with 17 points while Butch Kimpton had 11 for Klamath Falls, which shot only .209 from the field. Marshfield led at the half 18-16. Third Ranked Team Missing! From NAIA Kansas City, Mo. (U.R) Only one seeded team, third-ranked West Virginia Tech of Montgom ery, was missing today for the second round of the NAIA bas ketball tournament. The 32-team tourney, which opened Monday, has been re duced to 16 for today's eight game schedule. Quarter-finals will be held Thursday night. Villa Madonna of Covington, Ky., scored the one upset so far, whipping West Virginia Tech 93-91 Monday. SAXTON GETS POST North Bend (U.R) Cliff Saxton, head football coach at Siuslaw high school in Florence for two years, yesterday was named to the same post at North Bend high school. to the United Press All-America team along with four players from seven to 15 inches taller than he. On the court. Forte's specialty is a jump shot off "the wrong foot," a maneuver that confuses rivals. He also features speed, playmaking, and a two-handed long shot that keeps defenders from backing up to guard against his drive. The top three were followed in the balloting by Elgin Baylor of Seattle with 32 votes, Lennie Rosenbluth of North Carolina with 27, Hot Rod Hundley of West Virginia with 24, and Gary Thompson of Indiana with 15. (U.R) The coaches of the favorites, Lee Pfund of Wheaton and Jim Phe lan of Mount St. Mary's, agreed today on the dark horse in the college division basketball tour ney of the National Collegiate Athletic association. Both picked Kentucky Wesley- an. whose campus for 599 stu dents, the second smallest en rollment in the surviving field of eight, is only 40 miles from here. Wesleyan has won 14 and lost 11 games, the worst mark among the survivors. Phelan pointed out, "They've played better teams than just about anybody else. They've had Murray and Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky and Lou isville and just overall stronger opposition." Phelan's club, unbeaten in its last 20 games and second highest scoring college team in the na tion with an average of 92.1 points per game, will open the three-day tourney this afternoon against- Rider of New Jersey, which has 20 wins in 26 games. Lincoln and Benson of Port land turned in opening night victories before 4,946 fans last night as the tourney got under way. Lincoln, with a big height ad vantage, downed last year's A-2 champ, St. Helens, 53-48. Lin coln was ahead 52-32 in the fourth quarter and put in its reserves. Astoria's Fighting Fishermen fell before Benson's strong team 60-39. Guard Jim Warren of Ben son led the scoring with 18 while Darrell Reef of Astoria had 13.
