It was while taking part in a discussion of church business at a retreat in Corvillis that Mr. Reedy decided to go into full time Christian service. Mr. Reedy, who was a teach er of English and dramatics at Corvallis high school for seven years, attended Colorado State college of Education at Greeley, Colo.; Oregon State college, and the University of Oregon. He taught in the Eagle Point and Elk Creek schools from 1939 through 1942 and was at Gold Hill in 1946. Mrs. Reedy received her educ- ation from Southern Normal school in Springfield, S. D. and SOC. She has taught in the pub lic schools in Springfield and from 1940 through 1942 was with the Elk Creek school at Trail. From 1943 until 1945 she w'as . a teacher in the Phoenix Elementary school. Leaving for Rhodesia with their parents will be the three Reedy children, Jerry, 10, Karen, 7, and Linda, 5. The Reedys will serve in Rhodesia under the Foreign Missions board of the Congregational Christian Churches. Statistics Told on Christian Church Indianapolis, Ind. Disciples of Christ (Christian) churches in Oregon have 41,665 members in 170 Christian churches, accord ing to the Yearbook of Disciples of Christ just released by the In ternational Convention office of the communion in Indianapolis. States leading in membership are, Kentucky, Missouri, Indi ana, Illinois, Ohio, and Texas. Oregon Christian churches re ported a per capita giving of S8.20 to missionary causes and $47.20 for local expenses during the 1955-56 fiscal year. Oregon Christian churches re ported 2,069 additions by bap tism, and 1,834 additions by transfer of membership during the past fiscal year. On the national level, per cap ita missionary giving of Disciples of Christ churches amounted to $7.48. The total membership of the Disciples of Christ churches in the United States and Canada now stands at 1,930,760 in 8,062 churches. Senior Dorcas Society Tells of Organization's Activities in 1956 Members of the Medford Sev enth-day Adventist Senior Dorcas society received informa tion of the work done by the de nominational welfare leaders and workers during 1956 through the General Conference World Welfare service depot. The report also stated that during the last six years 1,721, 970 pounds of clothing and bed ding were sent to 52 overseas lands, and 107,248 pounds of food were shipped to the Ko rean orphans. This report in cluded only those things shipped through the Watsonville, Calif., depot, but members were told that there were also many tons of food and clothing sent direct ly overseas or shipped from gov ernment warehouses to ports of embarkation. Disaster Areas In addition to overseas work, and help in disaster areas of the United States, local societies give welfare service to their own communities. The Medford society main tains a Welfare Center building behind the Medford Seventh-day Adventist church, corner of Ed wards and Beatty. The center is open from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. each Wednesday to anyone need ing clothing, bedding, or other help. Jones has been invited to attend the j National Survey Commission on Christian Higher Education of j the American Baptist convention at the First Baptist church, i Portland. j The purpose of the conference is to seek the opinion and coun sel of representative pastors, educators, laymen, youth, lead ers and executives relative to the needs of American Baptist schools and colleges; the at titudes of the American Baptist constituency t o w a rd Christian Higher Education at home and abroad, and the proposed cam paign for funds to aid these in stitutions. The results of this survey will be presented before the American Baptist convention at its Philadelphia meeting in May and early June. Mr. Jones is also a member of the Christian Higher Educa tion Commission of the Oregon Baptist convention and will mee with that commission while in Portland. He is the pastor of the Eastwood Baptist church, North Keene Way dr. at Ridgeway. Sermon and Music Announced for Sunday Dr. D. Kirkland West will preach at both services Sunday morning in the First Presbvte- i rian church on "Not Ashamed of the Gospel." At the first serv ice the Westminster choir will sing "Let Us Break Bread To gether." The Chancel choir will sing the anthem "For All the Saints" during the second serv ice. Otis Swisher will sing "If God So Clothed the Grass." Churchmanship classes for persons desiring to become mem bers of the church will start Sunday. A class for high school and junior high students will be conducted by the Rev. John Reynolds at 5 p.m. in the Fire place room. Dr. West will lead a class for adults at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship hall. Any who are interested in joining these classes should contact one of the pastors. Westminster fellowship for senior high school students will be head at 7 p.m. The conclud ing meeting of a series on South east Asia will be presented by Carol Dyke and the outreach commission. Final Session of School of Missions Set for Sunday The final session of the School of Missions will be held Sunday evening beginning at 6 p.m. at the Eastwood Baptist church. Reports will be made by the var ious age groups participating in the school. In the morning worship serv ice, the pastor, the Rev. Richard M. Jones, will speak on "The Power of Persistence." The Choir will sing the anthem, "Thy God Reigneth." Nursery care is provided. Eastwood Baptist church is affiliated with the American Baptist convention and is located north of the Hedrick Junior High school. Cross in filling needs reported to them. Contributions of clothing, food and furniture are made to the center by church members and other friends of the society, and Dorcas members snonsor food and fancy work sales and var-! ious money raising projects for the necessary funds to maintain their work. The Medford society reports for the month of January and part of February show that 17 families were helped; 24 pieces of bedding and 311 garments were given away; $23.59 cash spent for food, and 64 food pack ages were distributed as well as pieces of furniture and miscel laneous articles. Mrs. A. J. Miracle, 1702 Co rona ave., and Mrs. B. F. Blank, Barnett rd., co-leaders of the j local society, said that due to ; the increased need for bedding ' caused by floods and fire in the I past year, the supply is nearly j exhausted. The society would j welcome contributions of used clothing and bedding. They espe cially need worn blankets that could be used as filling for quilts. Social Security Coverage For Clergymen Explained Clergymen who want social security protection, but who have not filed waivers of their social security tax exemption, should file the waivers by April 15, 1957, it has been announced by District Director Ralph C. Gran quist of the Internal Revenue Service and by James Peebles, manager of the Social Security Administration district office. By filing waivers last year many ministers, members of re ligious orders, and Christian Science practitioners elected to Lenten Sermons Scheduled At the Congregational church Sunday the Rev. Thomas Mc Camant begins a series of Len ten sermons on the general topic: "Christ and You." These sermons will be given at both the 9:45 and 11 a.m. services. The topics of the sermons will be: March 10, "What Do You Have Time For?" March 17: "How Good Is Your Money?" March 24: "What Makes You Happy?" March 31: "Where Is Your God?" April 7: "What Do You Know about Love?" A series of Wednesday even ing discussions on "Praying and Living" are also scheduled dur ing Lent, taking the phrases of the Lord's Prayer as specific topics. At the same time a member ship preparation class for adults is being held on Tuesday even ings for adults and one for young people is being organized. Audio-Visual Center Makes 1,000 Films Evangelical Audio-Visual cen ter, Sao Paulo, Brazil, now pro duces three daily radio programs for broadcast over more than 30 radio stations, and three addi tional weekly programs, reports the Rev. Robert L. Mclntire, of Presbytery of Wichita, director and founder of the center. Last year the center produced 1,000 filmstrips and placed 16 commercial records on the mar ket, Mr. Mclntire says, and adds that its newest enterprise is man ufacture of a 35 mm slide and film strip projector which can be adapted for use with any elec trical current commonly used in Brazil. The projector is especial ly popular in rural areas. Mr. Mclntire advises that the measure of advance may be esti mated from the fact that as re cently as 1950 it was almost im possible to sustain an evangelical broadcast on a major radio sta tion in Brazil. Student Council Holds First Meeting March 2 The recently organized High School Department of the First Church of the Nazarene held the first meeting of their Stu dent council Saturday, March 2, at the home of supervisor, Mrs. Lulu Larson. The following officers were elected: Mel Stiehl, chairman: Ron Warner, vice-chairman: and Ellen Kay McUne, secretary. Pianist, song leader, head usher, flower committee and a social committee were appointed. The Student council is in charge of planning activities of the High School department, one of which will be in progress Sat urday when the students will wash cars at the Barnes Service Station, West Main st., from 10 a. m. to 5 p. m. They are do ing this in order to earn $100 to apply on a tractor to be sent to Guatemalan Missionaries. Those waivers remain in effect and need not be re newed. Other clergymen who have not yet elected to be covered must file waivers by April 15 if they wish to have their earnings in 1956 and subsequent years count toward social security. The elec tion is made by filing Form 2031 with the District Director of In ternal Revenue. Form 2031 may be obtained from the District Director or from an Social Sec urity Administration office. After April 15, a .clergyman who has not filed a waiver is barred by law from electing soc ial security coverage if in each of (he years 1955 and 1956 he received $400 or more net earn ings from self-employment, in cluding any salary, fees, or hon oraria as a minister, member of a religious order, or Christian Science practitioner. A clergyman who elects social security coverage pays his tax as a self-employed person. His church is not liable for the tax. The tax rate for 1956 is three per cent of self-employment in come up to $4,200. Baptist Women To Meet Tuesday The newly formed Woman's Missionary fellowship of the First Baptist church will meet Tuesday morning, March 12. for a special program on the Near East. At the business meeting which will be held at 10:45, the presi dent of the group will lead in maKing plans lor the coming Shasta-Cascade meeting of the Conservative Baptists. The meet ing wnl be held at the church on March 28 and 29. It will bring together messengers from all of the Conservative Baptist church es in southern Oregon and north ern California. Devotions at the meeting will be brought by Mrs. L. S. Stenerson. Following lunch, they will see a recent film release of Bob Jones university in Greenville, S. C. The film deals with the present problems in the Near East. The missionary program is planned each month by a com mittee under the direction of Mrs. Irwin Peters. School Reports Given; Sermon Topic Told Pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene, 520 North Holly St., the Rev. Raymond W. Hum will preach on the subject, "Divine Guidance," at the 10:50 a.m. worship service Sun day. The 7 p.m. sermon title is "When Prayer Breaks Through." Nazarene Sunday school of ficials report that attendance at the 9:45 a. m. Sunday school ses sion has increased steadily for several weeks, with a high at tendance for the winter gained last Sunday when 438 wer pre sent. A goal of 1,000 has been set for Sunday school March 24, and arrangements have been made to use the auditorium of the McLoughlin Junior High school to take care of the crowd.
