Frldy, Much t. 1937 The Medical Roundup Sight Without Glasses People, and especially aging people, who have read Aldous Huxley's book on avoiding glas ses by taking eye exercises ask me about the subject js so silly that I h a ve wonder ed how anyone with any knowledge of the structure of the eye could possibly have writ ten it. Persons who need strong glas es generally have some deform ity of the eyeball or of the front window of the eye, and I cannot imagine this being corrected by any kind of exercising of mus cles in or around the eyeball. Older people past 45 have trou ble seeing near things because they have lost the ability to ac commodate to distance. In youth they did this by contracting a muscle inside the eye which al lows the lens to bulge a bit so that it brings near things into focus. I have asked some of the lead ing ophthalmologists (eye spec ialists) in the United States what they thought of these much tout ed exercises, and all of them said that, so far as they could see, the idea was stupid. i i Problems of The Bright Child Many people fail to realize 1 that the very bright child and his parents can have problems. Sometimes the child does not do j well in the schoolroom because there he is bored by the slow pace of teaching that is geared to the needs of the children who learn slowly. He may be bored, also, because of the lack of in spiration in the teaching. In some Grants Pass Man Files Suit Here F. G. Isharn, Grants Pass, has filed a complaint in the Jackson county circuit court against j Clarence A. Parsley, Sardine j Creek rd.. Gold Hill, affiliated with the Old Oregon Museum on Sardine Creek rd. In the complaint Isham seeks immediate and exclusive posses sion of $1,000 worth of relics he charges Parsley with possessing and wrongfully detaining. Among the items are a hu man skull, cannon ball, 23 In dian pestles and axes, 10 old planes, a bull whip, a hair rope, a goat skull, a whiskey flask, 19 piitols, a neck yoke for a human, a pair of leg irons, two fossil clams and one whale vertebrae. In addition to recovery of the items or SI. 000 if the items can not be delivered, Isham asks judgment against the defendant for costs and disbursements of the court action. Attorneys for the plaintiff are Balderree and Calvert of Grants Pass. THE BOOKKEEPER Bookkeeping Servic In My Horns Reasonable Rates PHONE 3-5232 WAIT'S TV ft RADIO SERVICE Oldest Shop us So. Mayo Foundation cases, because of the wide read ing of the bright child he knows more about the subject being taught than does the teacher. Sometimes he sees how the teaching could be much im proved. Often he is so keenly in- this fad. All I j terested in some subject such can say is that as electricity that he cannot be much of what bothered to stop and study math I have read on ! ematics or grammar. Because ot tnese tendencies, some brilliant students get A's in certain subjects while they fail in others. Often a good teacher will say, "He could do anything he wanted to do; his trouble is that he won't settle down and work." Even in col lege, many a very bright stu dent is rebellious; he hates . to follow a prescribed course, and he prefers to spend most of his time in the library, reading voraciously in th fields that in terest him. Parents of very brilliant child ren who are having trouble in conforming could get help from a couple of booklets recently published by Porter Sargent, of 11 Beacon st., Boston, 8 Mass. One is on the education of par ents of exceptional children, and the other is on the mental health and guidance of exceptional children. Sargent has three other books on related problems.
