(U.R) The 1,000-mile-an-hour wind tunnel at Cornell Aeronautical Labor atory one of the aviation in dustry's busiest test facilities has resumed operations' follow ing a five-month $2,225,000 mod ification program. Automatic data recording and computing equipment is an im portant new feature of the tun nel, -which can turn up 32.000 horse-power. Developed by CAL, the equipment completely pro cesses test data minutes after measurements are taken on a model in the facility. This oper ation previously required up to 48 hours. The tunnel is capable of test ing aircraft, missiles and pro pellers at speeds up to 1.3 times the speed of sound and at vary ing pressures from one-sixth to two and one-half atmospheres. Its new 8 by 8 foot test section employs "perforated" walls which permit accurate perform ance measurement on models at transonic speeds. The bulk of the nation's oper ational jet fighter planes and many commercial aircraft, in cluding all three of the forth coming jet transports to be flown in this country, have been tested in the CAL tunnel. MALHEUR NAMES DIRECTOR Vale (U.R) The Malheur county court has appointed the county's first civil defense dir ector. He is Bob Olch, a Vale insurance man. Thursday, March 7. 1957 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBVNS FIYE Woodpeckers' Ratta-Tqt-Tat Causing Utility Company Executives Headaches University Park, Pa. (U.R) A ratta-tat-tat, a ratta-tat-tat, a rat-ta-tat, ratta-tat, ratta-tat-tat. This is no parade. And it's certainly no picnic. Dryocopus Pileatus is driving them crazy. For two years scientists at Pennsylvania State University have been trying to figure out how to stop woodpeckers from lunching on the power line poles of public utility companies. Woody just goes peck-peck-pecking along. Shooting Punishable Shoot them? That's a federal crime punishable with a $500 fine and six months in jail. Paint the poles with strips of color? The researchers tried that, and the woodpeckers while showing a preference for cerise, kept on drilling neat holes in rainbow colors, three inces deep, nine inches wide, 12 inches long. Install electrical persuaders to give the hard-headed creatures a mild shock? That didn't work, nor did noisemakers triggered by the birds themselves. Metal Poles Too Expensive Make the poles out of metal, as a retired New Jersey engineer suggested? It costs too much. The whole idea is that 100 pecks a minute weakens the poles, and service is interrupted to install new ones An 11-year-old girl wrote sin cerely "If some sort of insula tion could be used to keep the humming sound out of the poles, . that his woodpeckers went away I'm sure the woodpeckers would lose interest since they are in terested only in food. Please give this suggestion attention, since it is the result of my un divided interest." A Connecticut house holder backed this up with the claim Klamath Canal Project Unopposed Washington (U.R) Interior Secretary Fred Seaton has in formed Congress that his depart ment has no objection to a House measure which would direct him to determine the best means of eliminating the hazards of an open canal within the city of Klamath Falls, Ore. The main canal of the Klam math project has a stretch of more than miles within the city, which is open ditch. The canal has claimed 26 lives since 1919. Seaton called the House joint resolution a "humanitarian mea sure." He added "since it may be a forerunner of more extensive and expensive legislation, how ever. Congress should consider either making such- costs non reimbursable or, if repayment is to be called for, it should be spread over a number of years." when he shut off the buzz in his electric clock. , The scientists discovered that the woodpeckers also peck on poles that carry no current and the drill holes to store as well as get food. No Report on Scarecrow Put up a "scare crow," per haps? One power company or dered three dozen models of a king bird, a pugnacious fellow the woodpeckers are supposed to fear. There's been no report that this worked' either. Fifty different chemical mix tures failed to do the trick. So did heavy mesh hardware cloth (which the birds chopped through and threaded from the poles), red flannel streamers (which the birds ignored) and the lashing of new poles to damaged ones (the birds assaulted the new poles). Says Dr. William C. Bramble, director of the research project, "When you hear one of these birds whacking away at a tree, you'd think it's a man with an axe." If only it were that simple. TIP FROM WAITRESS Detroit (U.R) James Pace, 23, made the mistake of visit ing a restaurant the second time. Pace was arrested after a wait ress recognized him as the man who had held up the restaurant earlier this week. 3 0 HIV TFTgm has the "stoimorloliBipfcit TOT 'p WAS YouVe aked for it . and here it is . . . the perfect answer to your need for a larger size, practical, food freezer, the AMANA "stor-mor" FREEZER bigger and better than ever with its exclusive feature ... the revolutionary "stor-mor" door ... not duplicated it in any other freezer!
