BSB3 Eagle Point The Idy Lions held a business meeting at the home of Mrs. Dean Colletta on Monday, Feb. 24. There were nine members present. Mrs. Don ald Geren presided and a com mittee was appointed nominat ing Mrs. Jake "sen as chairman. Also appointed was Mra. Ver non Bonebrake and Ir James Clark. Mrs. Boncbrake's com mittee is to serve the dinner on March 4 at the Teenage hall. On March 21 the Xafle Joint Lady Lions and the rspct Lady Lions will serve the state officers at a luncheon in Pros pect. All members arc invited to attend. The next board -meeting will be held on March 25 at the home of Mrs. Willard Cave. Mr.Cnd Mrs. Jim Cava wera the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wil lard Cave this past weak. Mr. and Mrs. Cave are from Rose burg. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Vaddell entertained Mr. and Mrs. Jack Silvers last week at a dinner party, and later they attended the Kiwanis Kapers in Medford. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Mueller of Watsonville, Calif., and former residents of Medford are visiting friends and relatives in Eagle Point and vicinity for a Jew days. Mueller is a railroad con di$(tor forhe Southern Pacific company. Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Vaughan will drive to Portland this week end to be joined by Mrs. Alice Leverette, mother of Mrs. Vaughan, and the three will fly () 'De '.Leigh. Motors O 134 S. Mrs. Fred Breugger and her mother, Mrs. Francis Horn buckle have returned from an extended vacation through southern California, visiting relatives. Truck With Diamond Jewelry Disappears Tucson, Ariz. (U.R) Tucson police were investigating today to determine whether a trunk containing 5200,000 in diamond jewelry had been "misrouted." The trunk disappeared from the Southern Pacific Railroad baggage room here sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 12:43 p.m. Monday. Fred J. Cannon, jewelry salesman for the Can-non-Schaefer agency in Los An geles, reported the steamer-type trunk contained three sample cases of jewelry which he had displayed to Tucson retailers a short time earlier. Cannon, 62. San Marino, Calif., told police he put the jewels back in the trunk and left it at the station while he returned to his hotel room to check out. He discovered it missing when he went to the station to check his luggage through to El Paso. Parmenter of the First Federal Savings and Loan association, and J. H. Pletsch, secretary of the Jackson County Federal Savings and Loan asso ciation, have been appointed to 1957 committees of the United States Savings and Loan league. Parmenter will serve on the committee on FSLIC law and regulations and Pletsch on the committee on the Federal Home Loan Bank system. The appointments were an nounced today by Roy M. Marr, Memphis, Term., president of the" league, which is the nation wide trade organization of the savings and loan business and represents more than 4,300 sav ings associations and coopera tive banks. The committee on FSLIC law and regulations studies current legislative proposals and regu lations affecting associations which have accounts insured by the Federal Savings and Loan insurance corporation. The committee on the Federal Home Loan Bank system con centrates its studies on the ef fectiveness of the Federal Home Loan Bank system, which oper ates as a central reserve banking system for savings associations and cooperative banks under government supervision. During the business meeting they went on record as favoring House Bill No. 163, and oppos ing the closing of banks on Sat urday. They voted favorably for a new dormitory at the fair grounds for the F.F.A. and 4-H groups. The display table featured gar den seeds showing many unusual ones. This was arranged by Mrs. O. T. Wilson and Mrs. Roy Col pitts. Mrs. Charles Champlin enter tained with a number of solos, with Mrs. Effie Kurtz as accom panist. Mrs. Kurtz also gave a reading, "The Garden of my Dreams." The building committee, with chairman Fred Kuest in charge, have completed remodeling the kitchen. A guest for the evening was Mrs. Elma Malery of Upper Rogue Grange. Cards were plyed after lunch was served by Mr. and Mrs. Clem Ault and Mr. and Mrs. Walt Sutherland. Griffin Craek Grange Griffin Creek Grange met Feb. 28. All officers were pres ent including a good attendance of Grange members. This was a social meeting so reports were brief. Mrs. Jessie Darby is improv ing slowly as is Mrs. Elsie Warner. A year's subscription to "Sports Afield" was given to Ray Guches, who is convalesc ing at his home on Bellinger lane. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Barns were given the third and fourth degree. An application for mem bership from Mr. and Mrs. Morris Tucker was received and will be voted on at the next meeting. The HEC is sponsoring a plant and rummage sale March 13 at the Eagles hall and West Main st. Anyone having rummage or plants to give may call Mrs. Eva Farrisworth at 2-4593 if they have no way to deliver. Plants are to be wrapped and names attached. The next HEC meeting will be at the home of Pauline Kelley on Thomas road, with Pearl Farnsworth assisting. The Harold Tblle's and Wesley Christleib served pie and coffee at the close of the meeting. Shady Cova Grange Shady Cove Grange met Wednesday evening at the Shady Cove school with a potluck, roast ham supper. There was a very good attendance of both officers and members. Both Mrs. J. Minor and Mrs. Studebaker models Medford, Ore: Ferry Suspended; Tax Agents Walk Astoria (U.R) A couple of Oregon tax agents have discov ered the peril of serving tax subpoenas on ferry boat oper ators. Tax agents William Huhta and Henry Boyd parked their car on the Oregon shore and boarded the Wcst-Puget Island ferry in order to serve papers on owner operator Elmer Danielson. Dan ielson accepted service during the trans-Columbia trip and then announced on the Washing ton shore that he was suspend ing service. Huhta and Boyd were forced to make a three hour hitchhiking trip via Long view back to their car. Oregon has been attempting to collect taxes from Danielson since 1945. He contends that he operates out of Washington and pays taxes in that state. Oregon taxes, he argued, would consti tute double taxation. A member of the Danielson family said yesterday that un less the tax dispute can be set tled the ferry would remain out of service. The largest of ocean steamers can travel 1,000 miles up Bra zil's Amazon river even in the period of low water. E. Stothers, who have been ill, were able to attend. Mrs. Stothers was in a Port land hospital and Mrs. Minor was in the Sacred Heart hospital in Medford. Bob Eastgate showed slides he had taken of his trip to Na tional Guard camp in Fort Lewis last year. This is his second year in the National Guard. He also showed slides taken by Jerry Eastgate during his stay in Alaska. Both Bob and Jerry Eastgate graduated from the Shady. Cove school. They are grandsons of Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Littlefield. Card games were also played during the social hour that fol lowed the supper. Mr. and Mrs. Barney Lewin were guests of Phoenix Grange. Other guests were Bob Eastgate and his mother, Mrs. Allen East gate of Medford. Mrs. Eastgate is Mr. and Mrs. Littlefield's daughter. The next regular meeting of Shady Cove Grange will be March 13. Hartack Has Hot Horses Hallandale, Fla.-(U.R) Willie Hartack, who rode 62. winners during the 40-day Hialeah Park meeting, drew two more "hot" horses for today's opening pro gram at Gulfstream Park. The 1955-56 national jockey champion was scheduled to ride Calumet Farm's Fabius in the 510,000 added Armed Handicap, a six-furlong spin named in honor of a former Calumet stakes winner. In a six-furlong race preced ing the feature, Hartack will be aboard Barbizon, another mem ber of the successful Calumet stable who will be making his 1957 debut. Barbizon was the nation's out standing juvenile last year when he won five of six starts, includ ing the Garden State Stakes. Hartack completed his suc cessful Hialeah stand Monday when he piloted Mrs. Eugenia Bankhead's Jabneh to victory in the $105,350 Hialeah Turf Handicap. HOCKEY Montreal U.R) Gordie Howe, Detroit's versatile right wing, retained his two-point lead over bis'teammate Ted Lindsay today i nhis bid for a fifth National Hockey League scoring cham pionship. Howe picked up one goal and one assist last week to increase his season total to 79 points. New York (U.R) Fred Glover of the Cleveland Barons, a nine-year veteran in the Amer ican Hockey League, seems a sure bet to win his first scoring title this season. The 29-year-old right wing scored six points in last week's action to bring his total to 91 through Sunday's games. This burst enabled him to increase his lead over teammate Jimmy Moore to eight points with only eight games remaining on the schedule. President Considers Trip To Treat Cough Washington (U.R) The White House says President Eis enhower is considering a trip to a warm, dry climate to get rid of the cough that has bothered him since inauguration day. However, Press Secretary James C. Hagerty said Monday that the President has made no final decision on whether or when to go. Mr. Eisenhower said he would like to go to Tucson, Ariz. "The President, as you know, has a cough which he has had for some time," Hagerty said. "All of us, including the presi dent, would like to see him get rid of that cough. Whether we would go to an area like Tucson has been dicussed but there has been no decision one way or the other." Trotting Group Names Wiswall Board Head Orlando.
