PCCs Banned Hope To Spoil By NEAL CORBETT United Press Sports Writer The University of California already has cinched the Pacific Coast conference berth in the NCAA regional basketball play offs at Corvallis but tonight the Bears start their battle to go as champions. They have the inside track in the run for the conference title. However, UCLA, Washington and Southern California still figure mathematically, and there is nothing those three would like better than to show up the Bears. All three were banned from the playoffs by NCAA edict, but they would still get plenty of satisfaction out of seeing Cali fornia go north as "only second best" in the conference. The Knicks rallied in over time to beat the Boston Celtics, 122-121, Thursday night, but they failed to gain ground on the Syracuse Nationals, who ran off an easy 123-112 victory over the Fort Wayne Pistons. The Philadelphia Warriors set a new league record by scoring 106 points in the first three periods while chalking up a 129 112 win over the Minneapolis Lakers. The hopes of wasnmgton and Southern California involve much higher mathematics, espec ially in the case of USC. A Few "Ifs" The Trojans could gain a four- way tie if: 1. They beat Oregon twice this week end; 2. They downed UCLA Tuesday; 3. They scored a double win over Cali fornia next week; 4. California and UCLA split their series; and 5. Washington State split with Washington next week end. And that's about as mathe matical as you can get. Washington's chances aren't quite that remote. If UCLA and Cal split, and Southern Cali- fornit defeats Cal and UCLA, the Huskies could grab the championship with a double win over Washington State next week. This week's schedule, in addi tion to UCLA at California and Oregon at Southern California, finds Stanford at Idaho and Washington State at Oregon State. Washington is idle. The PCC standings: California 11-1, UCLA 11-2, Washington 11-3, Southern California 7-4 Stanford 6-8. Washington State 4-8, Oregon State 3-9, Idaho 3-11 and Oregon 1-11. Bill Proposes Motorboat Speed Limit Increase on Diamond Lake A proposed amendment be fore the Oregon legislature sup ported by a group of Diamond lake home owners and concern ing motorboat speeds on that lake is faced by opposition by a number of sports fishermen in this area. The proposition (senate bill No. 103) which would amend Oregon Statutes 488.070 and 488.990 is: "No person shall operate a boat with an outboard or in board motor at a speed in ex cess of 25 miles per hour during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on days of the year that it is law ful to fish on Diamond Lake in Douglas County or at a speed of 10 miles per hour during those other hours of the day and on those days of the year that it is lawful to fish on such lake." Since the current speed limit is 10 miles per hour during fish ing season on the lake, amend ment would in effect boost the limit to 25 miles per hour during the aforementioned hours.
