Rubftr Welders in Lake view Friday afternoon but was held to the one-story frame structure by volunteer firemen. Cause of the fire was not de termined. Art E. Morton, operator of the rubber welding concern, said he had about S40.000 worth of equipment and stock in the shop. The damage is partially covered by insurance. That is how long her heart was stopped while doctors re- fiaired hole between heart's eft and right ventricles. Using an ice mattress, sur geons lowered Marilyn's body temperature to 84 de grees, stopping the heart. Merilyn left the Chicago hospital with usually fatal defect corrected. Portland Man Killed When Car Hils Crane Portland (U.PJ A 40-year-old Portland man was killed Friday Bight when the car he was driving crashed into a six ton crane loaded with steel plates. Police said that Mervin Ford Berry was dead on arrival at i local hospital. The crane was owned by Gun derson Bros., Engineering Corp., and was being driven down the street by Wilbur William Fee. A flagman was accompanying Fee down the street, police said, but Berry apparently did not see the flagman's frantic efforts to slow him down and crashed into the crane. The death was the seventh on Portland streets so far this year compared to 11 for an equal period of time a year ago. Alexandria. The Medical Roundup Emeritus Consultant la Medicine, Mayo tunic Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Mayo Foundation if ft) TREATMENT OF EXTENSIVE CANCER OF THE SKIN I was just reading a remark able article by Dr. Isadore Lampe. of the Alice Crocker Lloyd Radia tion Therapy Center, at the University of Mich igan. It was on the t r e a tment of cancer with x rays. His pic tures show pa t i e n t s who Dr Alvares who came in with big, foul ulcerating cancers of the face most of them so bad that one wonders how today any human being with a little intelligence could have let himself go until he got into such a state. Some of these persons had masses of cancer on the cheek or the lower lip, as big as the palm of one's hand. And yet, Dr. Lampe shows with before and after pictures that these people were cured, j and cured usually with remark- j ably little residual deformity. ; Dr. Lampe said also that most cancers of the neck of the womb that he sees are so far advanced ! that they cannot well be re- moved surgically. But even in ; these cases, half of the woman can apparently be cured by ra- I diation; certainly they are alive . and well five years 'ater. As I looked at these terrible pictures of face cancers I real- ; ized that many of the people had probably gotten into such ' a state because they had wasted , time with a cancer quack. Prob ably they and their relatives had thought that modern medi-; cine could never cope with the ; problem. Actually, it can cope I with the problem immensely bet ter than any quack can. ' Studies on Viruses At a recent big conference on viruses. Dr. Jonas Salk pointed out that many of the puzzling illnesses of childhood are prob ably due to some almost unde tectable infection of the brain with a polio or other virus that likes to live in nervous tissue. Dr. Salk wondered, as I have done many a time, if some of the twisted spines of children and many of the low backaches and muscle weaknesses of people i might arise in an old, mild and unrecognized polio injury to the ganglions of the nerves sup- j plying some of the muscles of the back. Years ago, for two weeks fol lowing a strenuous walking and ' climbing trip through the Cali-1 fornia Sierras, I had what is called a foot slap on one side. The muscles on the front of one leg, alongside the shin bone, were so weak that with each step the foot on that side came i down slap onto the sidewalk. Fairly obviously, when I was two years old and nearly died of a fever of unknown origin, I had polio. Interestingly, also, when occasionally I get a bad cramp in the muscles of a leg or foot it is usually in my slightly weak left side. I agree with Dr. Saik that some day we will know that some of the weaknesses and de formities that now puzzle the orthopedists (muscle and bone doctors) are remnants of an old unrecognized polio. Some day soon, when God grant polio is a very rare disease, we may find that these curious ortho pedic problems have disappear ed, much as the old formerly common tuberculous scars on the side of the neck have largely disappeared.
