House Committee May
Act on Comprehensive
School Reorganization
Salem (U.R) Action by the
House Education Committee on
the comprehensive school reor
ganization bill one of three key
education bills was expected
tomorrow.
0 A second hearing on the bill
yesterday revealed support for
) reorganization from the Oregon
School Boards Association, Par
0 ent Teacher Associations, the
Oregon Education Association
and the Iague of Women Vot
ers. Ffim Representatives Opposed
O Opposition to the bill was
voiced ty Yamhill and Luin
.county farm bureau representa
tives who said they feared ( it
wouii concentrate too much
G power in the state. They added
that a simple majority vote, of
members of proposed new ad
ruminative district would en
able more populous districts to
gobble up little ones.
Virginia McBride, Coos county
PTA council, said she felt re
organization would make the
counties stronger by enabling
them to completely re-study their

school systems and re-organize
them along more economic and
beneficial lines.
Gardner Knapp, Oregon School
Boards Association, said he fa
vored the bill but thought re
organization could be accom
plished without any "teeth" to
compel reorganization.
Former State Sen. J. O. John
son, Tigard attorney, did not
like the compulsion provision of
the bill, but favored re-organization.
He drew a laugh from the
200-odd persons and the Democratic-controlled
committee by
saying "we Republicans did not
take care of the schools, but me
hope you (the Democrats) do."
Statement Disputed
Rep. Shirley Field, Portland
Republican member of the com
mittee, disputed his statement
good-naturedly.
Commenting on loss of local
control, C. C. Thompson, Jack
son county, said it had been his
experience in consolidated dis
tricts that geographical jeal
ousies melted as the program
progressed.
Elmer itfcClure, Oregon State
Grange, said he was not opposed
to district consolidations if they
were voluntary. He said that
even under present "chaotic con
ditions" Oregon ranked fourth
in the nation in education.

A REAL BARGAIN Carolyn Alson shows a painting she
purchased for one dollar in a Chicago curio shop that
turned out to be an original oil by Winslow Homer and
worth $10,000. She discovered its worth when she took it
to a Chicago gallery to be cleaned. Ironically, Miss Alson
bought the painting in the shop owned by her sister.
Neither had any idea of its real value.
Lack of Washington Vote
Surprises Lucius Beebe
Washington -U.R) Social
ite publisher Lucius Beebe
today eyed the nation's capital
from its railroad yard.
The former cafe society
columnist lounged in his plush
private railroad car and al
lowed that he found the town
depressing.
"Too damn many govern
ment workers," he said.
"They breed and multiply in
appalling fashion."
Asked if he thought capital
residents should be allowed to
vote, he appeared momentar
ily astounded. .
"You mean the people of
Washington don'.t vote for
even such offices, as dog
catcher and mayor?" he asked.
Charles Clegg, his partner
in publishing the Virginia
City, Nev., Territorial Enter
prise, told him:
"They have 'taxation with
out representation."
"I'm against both," Beebe
said. "We'd be better off with
out either taxation or repre
sentation." That reminded Beebe of
taxes and he grew more de
pressed. "Everybody runs on a plat
form of strict economy, but
no one has kept his promise
since Calvin Cooledge," he
said.
"Eisenhower should have
cut the budget by 50 per cent
and stop giving away money
my money, specifically to
the yaps and Japs and Hotten
tots and rottentots and what
have you."
Then he led a brief tour
around his private car.
"You must see our golden
goblets," he said. "We use
them for water glasses when
we drink water."
