o O Three MJBL Quintets Advance in AAU Play Three mernbers of the Medford Independent Basketball league survived opening games of the AAU subdistrict play-off at Eagle Point last night and with Larry's drive-In of Grants Pass will contend Thursday at Grants Pat Junior high for berths in the full district eliminations. Q.Iutual of Omaha, the MIBL champ, will meet Larry's in the fit Thursday evening game Qand Hawkinson Tire Tread, the Medford runner-up, will take on Company A of the National Guard, which finished third in the local loop. The winners of tomorrow's games both will enter the full district affair and there will be r.o play-off between them. U.R) The first of nine suits filed against the State Highway Commission by residents of flood- wrecked Mitchell in Central Oregon opened here yesterday. Altogether, the nine suits seek $297,000 in damages. Plaintiffs contend that the highway com mission did not properly build highway 26 through the town. They contend that negligence in building the highway caused the disastrous flood of July 13, last year which wiped out much of the town. Speeding Bus Wrecked, 10 Killed Near Seoul Seoul, Korea U.R) A speed ing bus trying to overtake a truck plunged off the Seoul Han river bridge late Tuesday night, killing 10 persons and injuring 13. Thirty-one persons have been killed and more than 100 hurt in a series of bus and truck acci dents in the last week. Troutman 382 Handicap 12 125B Veterans' Bonuses Exempt from Taxes Salem All state veterans' bonuses are exempt from state and fereral income taxation, as are most other benefits paid to ex-servicemen or their survivors, Hub Saalfeld, director of the state department of veterans' affairs, has reported. Items excluded in computing federal and state tax returns, which are due April 15, include: A 1 1 Veterans administration benefits including educational subsistence, compensation and pensions; GI insurance div idends; insurance proceeds paid on death of t h e insured; state veterans' bonuses; m u s tering out pay and jobless benefits paid under the Korean GI bill; and social security benefits, workmen's compensation and sickness benefits. Disability retirement pay Is exempt from federal taxation. while Oregon taxes any amount in excess of $3,000 with this ex ception. If the VA had at one time been responsible for mak ing the payment, then it is total ly exempt, Saalfeld said. Retirement pay for length of service is taxed both by the fed eral government and the state, although the federal government now allows a credit for such in come, Saalfeld said. Nixon a two- month - old Siberian Huskie named Pat-Lie, Monday. Nixon took Pat-Lie to meet his Cocker Spaniel, Checkers. But Tuesday Nixon gave Pat-Lie to J. Mark Trice, secretary to Senate Republicans. i i m ' - . . .. Court Suspends Vincent Hallinan San Francisco (U.R) The California Supreme Court order ed Vincent W. Hallinan, once the Independent Progressive Party candidate for President, suspended from the practice of law for three years. The court decided that Halli nan's 1953 conviction of income tax evasion constituted "moral turpitude." Hallinan was sentenced to 16 months in prison and fined $50, 000 after he was found guilty of evading $36,730 in taxes. Hallinan, 58, said the court's decision was "disappointing," but he added "it really doesn't matter." "I haven't practised law any way since I left prison," he said. "I've been working toward an amalgamation of Socialist and other left wing forces and this will give me three more years for this work." The high court ruling said Hallinan's record "discloses a callous and brazen indifference to the obligations of an attorn ey, with the object of personal gain ..." "Under these circumstances, Hallinan should be removed from the practice of law for a substantial period." In suspending Hallinan, the Supreme Court was following a recommendation of the Board of Governors of the State Bar. Holmes Seeks Steps To Prevent Tragedy Salem (U.R) Gov. Robert D. Holmes today asked the state fire marshal to intensify his ef forts to prevent any occurance in Oregon like the death of many residents of a home for the aged in Missouri. The governor asked Robert B. Seaton says the United States Is using water at the rate of 250 billion gallons a day, six times more than in 1900.
