February 19, 1957 Science Teaching Improvement Plan Starts in Schools, Eugene A program involv ing 195 Oregon high 'school science and mathematics teach ers is now in progress under a University of Oregon science teaching improvement program, it has been announced. Sponsor of the program is the American Assciation for the Ad vancement of Science. It is be ing directed from the university. Objective of the program is to develop 195 better trained ed ucators who will interest stu dents towards vocations of sci ence and mathematics, accord ing to university officials. In-Service Training Awareness, by education, of the acute shortage of well qualified science and mathemat ics teachers prompted AAAS in working out details for a pro gram to solve the problem. The program called for the use of science counselors in the schools to give a type of in-service train ing to teachers on the job. In the spring of 1956, the university along with the University of Nebraska, Penn sylvania State university, and the University, of Texas, was designated as a center to set up a pilot study in determining how effectively this might be work ed out. Dr. Edwin G. Ebbighausen, associate professor of physics in the university, was named co ordinator of the center. Two science counselors, Oscar Schaaf and Clarence Diebel were named to work with him. Schools in 15 cities were chosen for admission to the pro gram. They are Forest Grove, Beaverton, Hillsboro, T i g a r d, Albany, Salem, Junction City, Springfield, Cottage Grove, Roseburg, Sutherlin, D i 1 1 a r d, Grants Pass, Medford, and Phoenix. ( mwj Highway Supervisor Will Travel Old Oregon Trail For Historical Pendleton (U.R) Larry Smitton, Oregon highway main tenance supervisor here, is pre paring for one of the biggest trips of his career and it won't be over the sleek fast miles of highway in Eastern Oregon he maintains. Smitton will be traveling the Old Oregon Trail the one orig inally used by emigrants to the West and which in many in stances is miles away from the present Highway 30 it's mod ern counterpart. Preparing Maps Since last summer, Smitton has been preparing maps, col lecting historical accounts of settlers that penned their journey's move across eastern Oregon and talked with hun dreds of pioneers who remember Coal-Laden Vessel Aground Near Harbor New Bedford, Mass. Farmers and ranchers in the area have agreed to let him pass his jeep over the trail, full of cameras and equipment when the weath er permits. The rugged and historical journey will be made by Smit ton and other highway officials from a starting point north of LaGrande on the east side of the Blue Mountains. The trail winds along the Umatilla river through wheat fields surround ing Pendleton and will end at a spot on the John Day river about 15 miles south of Blalock. Others To Continue Journey From that point, where Smit ton stops, other highway of ficials will take up the trail and continue the journey into The Dalles and near Mt. Hood. To the east, other officials will be forging the trail as it moves from LaGrande to the Idaho border. All highway officials are co operating in the project with their own time and effort to map and line out the trail for historical purposes before it is lost forever. Outside of farm machinery and cattle, it will be the first time that modern day travel of the route has been undertaken.
