Myhre with rr. ojron tills as co-hostess. lr. Bilrchfield and Mr. Rader gave comments on bills in both the state and federal legislatures- O. C. Brown was a guest at urange and gave a talk on new 'Jhings in life insurance. Brown belongs to a Salem Grange and is associated with the Grange MutuSl Life Insurance Co. Roscoe Roberts gave an in surance report, telling what the insurance rates are based on, and the difference in the Oregon and Washington rates. Ken Shaw, dance chairman, ftported 11 squares at the last dance and that the next dance will be Feb. 16 at the Grange. Lecturer Frances Moffatt had the program after Grange. A tableau presenting the American flag was presented and America was sung by the group. Mrs. rnst Larsen read "The Flag 0 Speaks." An article symbolizing the American flag was read by Ernst Larsen. Mrs. Charles Whitcher pre sented her secret desire by paint ing a very pretty picture in front of the audience. The roll call re ceived some interesting answers when each member was asked what they would do if they were given a weaner pig. R. J. Ritchey said his secret desire was to have a new piano for the Grange and he held an auction of several cakes with the proceeds going to the piano fund. Refreshments were served by the committee at the close of the meeting and program. The next meeting of the Grange will be Friday, Feb. 15 and the serving committee will be Mr. and Mrs. Glen Rader, Mr. and Mrs. Don Slater and Mr. and Mrs. Jass Wilson. Phoenix Grange Phoenix Grange met Tuesday, feb. 12 at 8 p.m. Several offi cers were absent. Mr. and Mrs Mark Norton were called to the East because of illness in Mrs Norton's family there and Mr. and Mrs. Jake Arnold are taking a vacation trip. Mr. and Mrs. Rader and Mrs. Pfinister, of Roxy Ann Grange, were visitors. Also present were several members of our own Grange who have been absent for some time. Charles Hockersmith reported on agriculture. He had attended a cattle auction and the an nual Cattlemen's association and quoted prices on beef and hogs. He said hay can be bought in the valley for as low as $18 per ton. He also attended an agricul ture meeting at the courthouse. He said the chief topic of discus sion was taxes and the revalua tion of farm lands in this coun ty, of which there are four classes. Some farm lands they said were in the wrong classifi fication causing them to be eith er taxed too high or too low. Reclassification would adjust this situation. Sister Florence Hartley said small fruit and garden farmers were forming an association, their object being to take care of the surplus of such products. The commercial canning of such fruits and vegetables, especially potatoes, has caused garden fresh products to move slowly, causing a surplus. She stated there would be a meeting in the near future which would be open to the public. Dee Hendrickson reporting on horticulture said there was an estimated 7,000,000 boxes of pears on the coast this year, but they were moving out steadily and there would likely be none left over. Mrs. Willis House of the Youth committee reported the bids on the Jackson county juve nile home would be opened this coming Friday. Mrs. Johnnie Green, Mrs Floyd Lacey and Frank Perl were reported ill. Vaughn Quackenbush of the music committee gave a brief history of music, when and where it was first mentioned in the Bible, and the way different types of music affect and influ ence people. Some music pro ducing warlike frenzy, other music causing people to laugh, sing and dance. He stated the time Yankee Doodle was sung by both English and American soldiers. To the Americans it was lively martial music, and the English sang it to ridicule the Americans. Home Economics chairman Coral Schroeder announced the next meeting of the club would be Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the home of Mrs. Al Lewis. Mrs Charles Lewis and Mrs. Sol Cox will be the cohostesses. There will be a covered dish dinner at noon and the meeting will fol low. She also called attention to the progress edition of the Fair banks Daily News-Miner, of Fairbanks, Alaska, on the dis play table. Mrs. Barney Lewin gave a brief resume of the con tents, which consisted of 12 sec tions and many pictures of Alaska. Alaska has petitioned for 40 years to become the 49th state of the union. The program for the evening consisted of group singing led by Vaughn Quackenbush and a skit arranged by Florence Hart ley, of the dramatice committee. She said she needed help to take parts due to some of her cast be ing absent, and called on most of the audience, when all were assembled where she had placed them, she announced the title of the skit as "The gathering of the nuts. Master Dee Hendrickson ap pointed Charles Hockersmith as a delegate to the flood control meeting to be held in Grants Pass Feb. 26 at 8 p.m. Plans were made for the Phoe nix Grange 26th birthday cele bration, to be held on our next meeting night, Tuesday, Feb. 26. This will be an open meeting. There will be a potluck supper at 7 p.m. Phoenix Grange to furnish the meat dish. Hackett's home Feb. 13. Elva Root led them in games and the meeting closed with yell and song practice led by Alta Neel and June Hendry. Margie Root, Reporter. Rubber Burners The Rubber Burners Tractor club met at Ronald Whilock's home. Mr. Carter gave a demon stration on how the cylinder and piston works. We worked on our work books. The meeting was adjourned and refreshments were served. Girls are encouraged to join. Saucy Canners Club The Saucy Canners of the Phoenix 4-H club held meet ing at the leaders home. The members made orange marmal ade. The next meeting will be at Mrs. Carter's home and Judy Holdridge will put on a demonstration. will be a program following. A large crowd is anticipated. Sister Edith Poe of the hos pitality committee introduced our three visitors, and each spoke briefly. Rader spoke on Grange insurance, which he writes, and concluded with a humorous story. Sister Poe thanked the Grange for the use of the hall for the HEC conference and those who had assisted her. Mrs. Dee Hendrickson re quested and was granted, the use of the hall for a Pomona memorial practice, Sunday, April 21. Refreshments of apple coffee cake topped with whipped cream and coffee were served by the refreshments committe, Mr. and Mrs. Loyal Bates, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hamilton and daughter Linda, and Mr. and Mrs. Warren Loffer, who sub stituted for the Floyd Lacys.
