outboard motorboats each year,
: and fatalities in this field are
rising steadily, largely . due to
operator carelessness, according
to the National Safety Council.
Commander Robert F. Barber,
U. S. Coast Guard, said that
"fatalities from outboard mo
torboat accidents ranged from
36 in 1952 to 190 in 1956," show
ing a steady increase each year.
He called the increase of 39 per
cent in such deaths in 1956 over
1955 "a matter of grave con
cern." Most of the casualties, Barber
added, are caused by ignorance,
foolish or careless operation, or
reckless disregard of the sim
plest rules of seamanship and
common sense.
"They just never should have
happened, and therefore the cas
ualty rate is far too high every
year for the degree of hazard
normally involved," he con
cluded. -

Historic Tree Gets
Too Big for Its Roots
San Juan Bautista, Calif. (U.R)
An historic tree just got too big
fdr its roots and fell victim to
its own fame.
' The tree, a 100-foot blue gum,
was planted near the historic
Castro house, an adobe hacienda
dating back to the days of the
Spanish dominion over Cali
fornia. State park authorities decided
to remove the towering tree be
cause it was sending out roots
undermining the foundation of
the ancient dwelling and its root
system was no longer strong
enough to support the trunk
properly.

furnished by the Atomi Energy
Commission, according to a
study made by Commerce Clear- o
ing House, national reporting
authority on tax and busuiesj

Under the system, the AEC
issues access permits" to qual
ified firms. Nearly half the ac
cess permits give the holders
what is known as "secret re
stricted" data.
CCH said this is an indica
tion of the commission's high
degree cf cooperation with bus
iness.

countants, chemists, city and
state agencies, engineers, health
boards, insurance companies, re
search organizations, trade as

north-eastern New Mexico, was
named after Cheyenne Indian
chief, called Rabbit Ears because
his ears had been frozen during
a particularly severe winter in
the 19th Century. The chief was
killed in battle, and is buried on
