Famed Paintings in
London Art Academy
Said To Be Forgeries
London 'U.R) London art
expert Leonard Koetser said to
day he can prove two Royal
Academy "masterpieces" are
fakes and is convinced some
paintings in Paris' famed Louvre
museum are, too.
The Dutch-born art dealer
threw sponsors of a Royal Acad
emy exhibition into an uproar
Tuesday with charges that two
portraits supposedly painted by
German artist Hans Holbein, the
younger, are actually cheap imi
tations. Valued at $450,000
The academy values the two
paintings' at $450,000.
One. said Koetser. is worth
less and the'other is worth only
10 per cent of its 5235,000 price
tag.

If Royal Academy officials
don't believe it, Koetser said, he
is willing to pay the $140 cost
to have them scraped for in
spection. "When that's been done, ex
perts can examine them and de
cide whether they are genuine
Holbeins," he said today. And,
he added, the Louvre also has
some mis-identified paintings
hanging on its walls.
More Than 400 Years Old
The Holbein paintings Koet
ser questions are portraits of
William Warham, archbishop of
Canterbury and adviser to Eng
land's King Henry VII, and Sir
Nicholas Carew, keeper of the
King's horse. Both paintings are
more than 400 years old.
Koetser said he doubted if
either painting was a deliberate
forgery. He said both probably
were painted by followers of
Holbein, who died in 1543.
Tass Report of
U.S. Plane Hauling
Arms Said Untrue
Karachi, Pakistan (U.R) A
U. S. Air Force spokesman de
scribed as a "complete fabrica
tion" a Soviet news agency re
port today that an American
plane was forced down in India
i while carrying arms to Pakistan.
Col. Clinton True, U.S. air
attache here, said the Tass agen
cy dispatch broadcast by Mos
' cow was a "complete fabrication
without any apparent founda
i tion."
Said Forced To Land
The Tass dispatch said Indian
aircraft forced a U. S. Air Force
Globemaster to land at Palam
Airport while it was flying arms
from Singapore to Pakistan.
True said he had no knowledge
of any U. S. Globemaster due at
Karachi, especially from Singa
pore. The U. S. Air Attache in New
! Delhi and Indian government
sources there said they had no
I knowledge of any aircraft forced
; down or otherwise involved in
'. any incident with Indian planes.
Top U. S. embassy officials in
Karachi also were bewildered
' by the Tass report,
j Only One on Schedule
I True said his flight schedule
j included only one Globemaster,
! due in from Clarke Field in the
; Philippines with a vehicle and
i minor machinery.
"This is news to me." he said
of the Tass report. "The report
: seems a complete fabrication
; without any foundation. If there
! was such a plane due here I
would certainly know about it."

Snow Over Large
Section of East;
Florida Cooler
By UNITED PRESS
Snow flurried over a large
section of the East Coast today
and the rest of the nation cooled
off.
A low pressure disturbance
continued eastward, spreading
snow over New York, Pennsyl
vania, the New England states
and down into the Virginias.
The northeast section of the
country also was a source of
widely aiiiering temperatures.
Mercurv scooted nn m much ac
25 degrees higher than the pre
vious day s reading in some !
parts of the section. The lowest
readings in the nation also were
found there as readings sagged
near zero in the elevations.
Cooler in Florida
The cooline-off was noticpahle
as far south as Florida, where
nignt time mercury sank as low
as the upper 30s. The chillv air
'extended from the plains to the
south Atlantic and Gulf states.
Aside from isolated showers
over Central California and
along the Texas gulf, the rest of
the nation was without rain or
snowfall.
Skies Kept Clear
A king-size high presure area
that stretched from the plains to
the Pacific Coast kept skies
clear.
Meanwhile, high winds that
tormented the sea off the Caro
lina coast Tuesday subsided. At
least two vessels were reported
to have run aground and another
ship sank.
An unexpected snow storm
that deposited thick amounts of
snow over the midwest Tuesday
disappeared by night time. One
motorist was killed in Michigan
after he lost control of his car
on a slick road.
