Our teenager has too much sex information. Mrs. H.M. We couldn't shield her if we tried. Mr. H.M. Isn't it possible that we parents go too far these days in giving youngsters sex infor mation? I overheard a conversation re cently between my 15-year-old daughter and one of her friends and I was appalled at what that child knows. In the first place, they went on and on for hours with this nonsense that tney don't even need to know. In the second place, I think they have a lot of facts twisted. They talk openly about things that would have made me blush at 18. I know it's supposed to be modern and progressive, but I think sex is far too important in the lives of these teenagers. Mrs. H. M. I feel that a youngster can't have too much information about sex. They hear and see so much in the movies, books and magazines, anyway, that we couldn't shield them from this knowledge if we tried. I know I had a great deal of misinformation about sex when I was my daughter's age and it gave me a lot of unnecessary fears and distorted attitudes. I promised myself I would not burden mv children with lies and fantasies. ; I would prefer that our daugh- j ter did not discuss these things with her friends, but we can't supervise her all of the time. I don't believe sex is overly im portant to our daughter at this i time. i The Council: It is impossible to state flatly how much sex in-. formation is "too much." The i amount and kind of information ! that is right for each child varies . with the individual. Mrs. H. M.'s thinking is on j the right track when she says she says she will not burden her belief that "a youngster can't have too much information about sex." More facts than they need or are ready to assimilate can be as much a burden to youngsters as lies. The fact that this young girl discusses sex problems at such length with her friend may be an indication that she does not fully understand the facts she has been given or that she does not have the kind of informa tion that satisfies her interest. Her father's impression that she has "a lot of facts twisted" in dicates that more information or the clarification of old informa tion is wanted. It is possible that this girl's in formation has been one sided and that she wants and needs more than the bare biological facts. It is natural for teen-agers, who already have these facts, to want to discuss more fully how these facts apply to their lives in terms of morality. Most educators, psychologists, clergymen and parents agree to day that supplying youngsters with both the true facts and full and open discussion will not cause them to place too much emphasis on sex. Lies and evasions are much more likely to have this effect. Mrs. H. M. should try to find out through tactful probing ex actly what is the source of her daughter's confusion. If the girl can feel comfortable discussing sex-related questions with her parents, she is unlikely to seek lengthy discussions of the sub ject with friends who may be misinformed or have distorted views.
