Wilson Expected To Stay on Job for Year
Washington (U.PJ Some
Pentagon associates of Defense
Secretary Charles E. Wilson now
expect the Cabinet member to
remain in his post for about
another year.
There had been recurrent re
ports earlier that the secretary
would depart the government in
mid-summer after seeing the
new military budget through
Congress.
Some sources speculated that
President Eisenhower may name
Gen. Alfred M. Gruenther to
succeed Wilson. If that is the

Portland Ladleman Killed by Hot Metal
Portland (U.R) A 43-year-old
ladleman for the Oregon
Steel Mill died late yesterday
from burns he received in an
accident at the plant Monday
night when a 21-ton ladle of
molten steel broke loose and
sprayed hot metal on him.
Howard S. Beck suffered
burns over 90 per cent of his
body. Three other employees
suffered injuries when the hook
holding the huge melting pot
broke and sprayed the fiery
metal on them.
Plant spokesmen said the
huge bucket of 2800-degree liq
uid fell about four feet after
breaking loose. The four work
men were standing on a catwalk
when the liquid struck the floor
and splashed back onto them.
