It is felt that the exchange will help to promote a better understand- Big betee the students of both schools. Upon their return from dledford High school. Bob and Marylou will make a report to the student body. Lecture on Alcohol The Oregon Temperance League sponsored a lecture on Aicohol and its effect to man last Thursday. Melvin Derby spoke to each American prob lerrQ class. The classes had pre viously tilled out questicnaires l6) alcohol, and Derby allowed the students to ask questions (k'er the material on the aues- uonaires, or any questions they might have on the subject of alcohol. These questions includ ed Why does a person"s be havior change when he is under the influence of alcohol?", and "How much alcohol must be in the blood stream before a per son is considered intoxicated?" National Campaign Ine journalism classes are participating in a national safety campaign contest. Plans are be ing made for an all-out effort to promote safety on the highways. The contest will be held through out the month of March. A con test for the best safety editorial ' and editorial cartoon is to be Qheld with prizes of $100 for the winners of both divisions. The State police have been cofculted concerning the matter of placing signs and attention catching devices aloftg the high way to remind motorists to slow down and drive safely. The school with the best campaign and the best safety results will win a $200 prize for their school paper. Student Government Day pri mary elections were held Thurs day, to determine the candidates for the general election of next week. The candidates for county judge, the most important office held by Craterites. are Bob Elden. Republican; Ron Harri son, Democrat; and David Mack, Independent. Other elective of fices are county coroner, sani tarian, watermaster, county con stable and engineer - surveyor. These students will campaign through this week, before the final election is held. Students will be appointed to the offices of boys 4-H agent, county home extension agent, county custodi an and court reporter. Womini Armed Forces Representatives from the four branches of the womens armed forces spoke to interested girls last Monday. These representa tives presented a preview of life in a branch of the womens serv ices and explained everything to the girls from the uniforms to marriage in the service. Linfield college speech tour nament is being held Feb. 21-23 and speech students are prppar ing material for the tournament. Beginning speech students as well as the advanced students are preparing material for the tournament. Variety of Events Linfield offers variety of events for the contestant, with extemporaneous speaking, im promptu speaking, serious and humorous declamation, oratory, radio speaking, salesmanship, in terview, student congress, de bate, after dinner speaking and acting. Miss White's last period senior English class chucked heartily when the class secretary reading the minutes of the previous days class stated that "Miss White spoke to the class on what ap peared to be some very ancient history." i Troop 13 Boy Scout Troop 15, Phoenix, held a Court of Honor Feb. 6 at the Community building. Chris Barker, Ray Harrison, John Klassen and Roy Harnden presented the awards. Everett Overholt and Ray mond Thompson received the Star Scout rank. Those who received second class were Randy Brown, Gil bert Brown. Tom Huff, Jack Suit and David Wiseman. Year pins went to Raymond Wallace and Billy Short. Sixteen merit badges were presented to Scouts. Junior assistant scout masters, Henry Soctt and Mike Campbell, showed a film on Scouting, loaned by the Grey hound Bus' Lines. Sunday, February 10. 1957 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THHEB State Police Report Three Vehicle Accidents on Friday No serious injuries were re ported in three separate car accidents in Jackson county Friday, state police said. William B. Simons, 60, Camp White, was treated for a cut jaw at the Camp White infirm ary and his passenger, Josephine Jones, 62, of 2122 Crater Lake highway, was taken home by bystanders after she received a leg injury in an accident on the Camp White "drag strip", police said. The accident occur red at 7 p.m. Vehicles Sideswipe According to police, Simmons said he was driving the car north on the strip when he ap parently suffered a heart attack and Vent off the road at the end of the strip. No other ve hicle was involved in the ac cident. oPlice said a car operated by Vernon Caldwell, 38, of 131 Alder st.. Central Point, and a lumber truck operated by Orval Paris Kelly, 44, of 1629 Thom as rd., sideswiped each other near the center line on the Cen tral Point-Jacksonville rd. about one-half mile from Jacksonville. Caldwell's car was traveling north and Kelly's truck was traveling- south when the acci-l dent occurred, officers Said. No injuries were reported and no i citations were issued. The acci-l dent occurred at 11:25 a.m. A car operated by Mrs. Mari on Stickney Lane, 44, of 296 Edwards St., Medford, struck a parked car registered to Robert Joesph Arnold, 17, Avenue F, Eagle Point, in front of Arnold's residence at 7:50 p.m., police reported. Officers said Mrs. Lane told them she was coming around a j curve on Highway 62,. when she j was blinded by lights of anoth er car and went off the road.
