Frank Cars well Portland Mentor Portland UR) An unexpect ed shuttle in the Portland Bea ver coaching staff late yesterday saw Bill Fleming resign and outfielder Frank C a rs w e 1 1 named Immediately to fill the vacancy with the club. Fleming had served as a coach with the Beavers since 1952. He first Joined Portland as a pitcher in 1948. i Carswell, a veteran of the pro fessional game since 1941, joined ' Portland last June after his pur chase from Tulsa of the Texas league. Medford high school hoop sters go out tonight and Friday to get the jump in the South ern Oregon conference second half while the Crater Comets, although decidedly the under dogs, are still ambitious for their first triumph in the circuit. The Black Tornado and Com ets' collide at the Hcdrick gym at Medford tonight and at Cen tral Point tomorrow. Varsity game time is 8:15 p.m. on each occasion. Junior varsities mix I it at 6:30 p.m. Since Klamath Falls, co-lead-. er with Medford at the midway ! point, is idle this week end, the Tornado has a big opportunity to take over lone leadership from the Pelicans. Medford will have to sweep the Crater series to do it. A split with the Comets would give Klamath the loop's top place percentagewise. The Medfordites desire the league leadership for a psycho logical edge next week when the defending champs oppose the Pelicans at Klamath Falls. Tornado teams, more often than not, have found the Pels tough to beat on the Klamath floor. Haven't Given Up But victory is just about as important, toofi to the Comets who don't want to settle for a winless season in the circuit in their first year as an A-l competitor. And the Crater crew says it hasn't given up. The Comets made rugged nights for the Tornado despite their two stebacks in the first round and more of the same hard battling is anticipated this week end. Crater hit its best stride of 1ht iepaon In a Insinff cause to Klamath Falls last Friday and is hoping for a repeat perform ance to give a nip and tuck battle to Medford. Medford has its rugged play ers, too, in Dick Copple, Dick McLoughlin and Neil Plumley, who are expected to be starters tonight, and in Tom Hamlin. Others likely to be in Med ford's , opening five are Dick Puhl andl.arry Perkins. Possible opening five for Crat er is Dick Davis, Fred Herrmann, Randy Campbell, Joe Teeter and Wayne Allen. Grants Pass and Ashland are rivals in the other league series this week end. : SIPdDIKTS Clark Promoted To Head Grid Coach of USC Trojans Los Angeles (U.R) Penalty- ridden University of Southern California has turned to a mem ber of is own staff to assume the role of head football coach after having vainly sought a name coach.
