Mayo Foundation Spina Bifida Quite a few persons ask about a child who has a spina bifida, by which is meant a defect "'?5JJ"", usually in the lower part of the spine. In the worst cases, there is a tumor pro jecting b a ck--wards from the lower part of the child's back, and this Dr Alvarez otten can be removed surgically. Unfortun ately, in these cases, the child is likely to have serious defects perhaps up in the brain and as a result he may get a large head full of water, a so-called hydrocephalos. In the worst cases of spina bifida the spinal cord and the nerves coming out are not well-formed and so the child may have deformities of the hips and feet. He may have trouble learning to walk, or to control his bowels; and when he does walk he may have a pecul iar gait, because some of the muscles of his legs may be weak. There may even be club feet. Unfortunately, and operation on the tumor can iot cure these troubles. Many older persons are dis turbed when an x-ray man re ports that two or three of their lower vertebras are defective. Usually in these cases no treat ment is needed and, besides, no thing much could be done. The Benign and Malignant Tumor Many persons are puzzled be cause their physician uses the terms benign and malignant. Benign means that "there is a tumor or ulcer which is not cancerous and will not grow and scatter so as to kill the patient. A malignant tumor is a cancer ous tumor. Many physicians often speak of a "malignancy? when they mean cancer. A cyst ta little sac of fluid) is usually benign, but there are a few cyctic tumors that have cancer inside them; hence they are best removed surgically. Only after the lump has been examined by a pathologist, with his microscope, can one say what it is. "Functional" troubles are us ually nervous in nature and not due to any local ulcer or tumor Health Officials Return from Course Corvallis Charles B. Clark and Orie Moore of the Jackson county health depart ment completed a special three day short course for sanitarians Wednesday at Oregon State col lege. Forty-nine public health workers from every section of Oregon were enrolled in this year's course, sponsored jointly by the OSC school of engineer ing and the state board of health. Public health during civil dis asters was emphasized this year. New methods for emer: gency testing of water supplies and sanitation problems in mass evacuations drew special at tention. The Coos county flood problems of last year were- used as a case study. Sewage disposal by individual septic tank systems and enforce ment of health laws were also reviewed. Public health officials, college staff members and Ore gon Civil Defense Agency work ers conducted classes. that could be cut out. By "or ganic" we doctors usually mean something wrong that we can see and cut out. The Electrocardiogram All patients should know that, much as with x-ray films which must be interpreted expertly, so also with electrocardiograms, the wiggly lines traced by the instrument are of no value until they have been interpreted by an expert who knows just what every little wave means. Most important of all, the doctor must know how many of the little wiggles he can disregard be cause they are within the limits of normal for a person of the patient's age and weight. Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer re quests for informantion or to at tempt to diagnose by mail. (Released by The Register and Tribune Syndicate, 1957) Pesticide Sales to Bring Record Sum Washington (U.R) Pesti cide chemical sales in 1956, boosted by heavy insect infesta tions in the South and South west, will return a record $250 piillion to producers, the Nation al Agricultural Chemicals As sociation estimated. This will be a 25 per cent higher return than in 1955 when sales totaled S200 million, the association added. The opening of new markets for pesticides also pushed up sales, the association said. There has been a greater use of the chemicals in public health pro grams throughout the world. The World Health Organization, a United Nations agency, is cur rently conducting a campaign "to destroy disease-carrying in sects" in Latin America, Africa and Asia. The heaviest insect outbreaks during the year in the United Slates were in Florida where the Mediterranean fruit fly threatened the citrus industry; in the Southwest where the al falfa aphid rampaged; in the cotton-growing areas of the South where there was a heav-ier-than-usual boll weevil in festation and in the West where grasshopper swarms endangered crops.
