Costello, serving a five-year sentence for understating his in come from 1947 through 1949, claims he was sentenced under the wrong federal law. He has asked the court to rule that he should have been punished un der a different statute which puts a one-year limit on jail terms. The high court, which pre viously upheld Costello's 1953 conviction, will schedule argu ments on the new legal point, later this year and then hand down a decision. drugs many of us fear inordin ately is the ovarian extract that is of helpful to thousands of women who suffer from the flushes of the menopause. Why do we so fear it? As nearly as I can find out, because years ago someone gave large doses of the drug to some mice for the dura tion of their life, and some the mtle animals got cancer. This would be like giving a huge dose of the estrogen every day to a woman, from her girl hood to her old age. Actualv, what we do to a woman is to give her a tiny dose, such as can hardly be seen with the naked eye, and we give it for perhaps six months, or less than a hun dreth part of the woman's life. I have given it to some women for 10 years and more, and none of them got cancer. Some of the leading women's specialists in the country have no fear of the drug, and prescribe it freely for anyone who needs it. A couple of British research workers say that in mice it cannot produce cancer if its use is interrupted occasionally. Dangers from X-rays Because of recent articles on the late dangers of too much radiation, many persons have been asking me if they should re fuse to have their chest and their teeth x-rayed. After read ing much on the subject, I doubt if there is any need for alarm. The dosage of x-rays given when a person is examined is too small to cause trouble. It is only when a person is treated with b;g doses of x-rays, as for a cancer, that years later there might be some trouble. Several persons have begun worrying about the tiny amount of radiation that can come off the hands of a watch or clock, but such worry is foolish. Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSBY United Pres Correspondent Hollywood U.R) This is the year when calypso eclipses rock 'n' roll, and the Andrews Sisters iv are proud to have started the West Indi an music fad, despite pokes to the contrary from Harry Belafonte. Back in 1942, Maxine, Patty and La- Aiine Mosby verne came out with "Rum and Coca Cola" which they claim introduced calypso to the American public. Their record sold 5 million cop ies. This year, thanks to Bela fonte's albums and a song called "Banana Boat." calypso is be ginning to push rock 'n' roll off the juke boxes. It appears to be the muscial fad of 1957. Authenticity Challenged Belafonte recently charged the Andrews Sisters' "Rum and Coca Cola" was not "authentic" calp so. But the girls still the top trio of the entertainment busi ness say they truly were 15 years ahead of their time. "A calypso singer named the Duke of Iron sang the song to me after a friend of ours, Maure ty Amsterdam, went to the is lands and heard it," explained Patti. "Calypso is from the French word, Carrousel, and it means the news that gets around the islands of the West Indias," put in Maxine. "The American pub lic wouldn't be interested in the local news of Jamaica. So we had to change the lyrics. Lyric Improved "The original lyric was about a doctor who lives on the islands and always was drunk. Finally he died. We could hardly use that lyric. "What's wrong with changing lyrics Maxine asked. "We bet Belafonte has. too. The tune we used was identical to the or iginal we heard from a West Indian calypso singer." This year "Rum and Coca Cola" is enjoying a revival, thanks to the 1957 calypso fad. The Andrews Sisters together again after a two-year spat also recorded a new calypso tune last week, "No Baby." They heard the song on a record sent them by a friend who visited Jamaica. WAIT'S TV & RADIO SERVICE Oldest Shop in So. Oregon 409 E.
