APPLEGATE-JACKSONVILLE Benefit Ball Games Slated By HELEN MITCHELL Applegate-Jacksonville A benpfit ball game for the March of Dimes will be held at the Applegate school gym Saturday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. The Ruch and Applegate community churches, and the Ruch and Applegate school boys will play a basketball game, and the girls will play volleyball. The Apple gate and Upper Applegate Home Extension units, the Applegate and Ruch 4-H clubs, and the Applegate and Ruch PTA's will be in charge of the refreshments. Admission will be by donations, and everyone is urged to attend. The Rev. George Davis, assist ant superintendent of Oregon district of the Assemblies of God church, of Brooks, Ore., will be a guest speaker at the Applegate Community church Sunday, Jan. 27, at 8 p.m. ' Mrs. Chester McDonough, Mrs. Jim Winningham, and Mrs. Carter Hibbs took a pleasure trip to Portland last Sunday. Accompanying them is Mrs. Harry Whitney of Jacksonville. The Ruch Community church had a clean up day at their new building site last Saturday, and children and members assisted in the project. Mrs. Lewis Arnold spent sev- eial days at Eureka, Calif., visit ing her sister. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Bowles of Grants Pa?s were recent visit ors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lance Offenbacher. After their visit here, the Bowles left for Salem, where they attended the Governor's inaugural ball. It is reported that while attending this event,. Bowles was wearing an "Applegate haircut," which wai given him by Lance Offenbacher. the shower. Mrs. Prowell made a hurried trip to the hospital, where she gave birth to De borah. The baby shower con tinued as planned, and 27 wom en attended. Guests put their names on a block for a quilt to be used by the baby. A cake which was decorated by Mrs. Lester Rich was served at the shower. Rural Reflections: Gary Silva, son of Mrs. Morris Byrne, was distraught as he discovered his naw 4-H calf missing. "I don't have any more chores to do, my calf is gone" moaned Gary. The runaway wa finally found across the river on neighbor Clint Kendall's ranch, and all is well once again in the world of Gary and his calf. The recent story of the turkey thieves at the Morris Byrne r?nch. which was 'written by Mrs. Maude Ziegler and printed in the M.T. was also printed in the Sacramento Bee, according to Mrs. Morris Byrne, who had relatives send her a clipping of the story. A card party was held last Saturday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Morns Byrne. Guests attending the occasion were Mr. and Mrs. Dave Win ningham. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Moody of Camp White. William Nostrand, and Willard Wilson. Mrt Nira Nash, assistant di rector of the Children's home in Portland, spent a couple of flays last week wtin ner Dromer and family. Mr. and Mrs. Wil fred Pearson. Officers Elected By Fruitgrowers Martin Luther Jr. was elect ed president of the Fruit Grow er's league at the annual meet ing recently at the YMCA. Also elected were Llyle Kin ney, first vice president; Ron James, second vice president; and Fred Morlan. secretary. Directors are Charles Henry. Larry Hull, Paul Cubertson, and Robert W. Root. David B. Low ry and Llyle Kinney were elect ed to three year terms as direc tors. Speakers at the meeting were Jack Hoffeur from the Medford Irrigation district, Walter Hof feur from the Talent Irrigation district, and Harold Sexton, of Rogue Valley Irrigation dist rict. A baby shower was planned for Mrs. Prowell at the home of Mrs. Herman Oliver with Mrs. Vince Free mantle and Mrs. Charles Gibson as cohostesses. They are '"Marty," "Not as a Stranger." and "Rebellion of the Hanged." A Defa spokesman said until now American film producers refused to exhibit in Communist nations. Explosion Wrecks Magnesium Plant Bethel, Conn. (U.R) Fire and explosions wrecked the magnesi um plant of the White Metal Rolling & Stamping Corp. and a garage today and for a time threatened to spread to Bethel high school. Fire companies from Bethel and surrounding communities saved the high school by wetting down the building. A series of explosions rocked the area, blowing out the win dows in the school and other buildings along the adjacent main thoroughfare. No one was injured. Loss of the plant and garage was esti mated at SI million. OLCC Administrator Hands in Resignation Portland (U.R! W. H. Bail lie, administrator of the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, handed in his resignation yes terday. Gov. Robert Holmes only last week had appointed an entirely new three member commission. The group asked Baillie to re main in office until a successor is appointed.
