All agreed it can not be ignored. The Soviet Communist party newspaper Pravda said Wednes day the United States may turn tht Middle East and the Far East into "hfctbeds of atomic warfare" by carrying out report ed plans to establish atom-armed American units in Turkey, Iran, Japan and Okinawa. The official Soviet Tass News Agency immediately picked up the charge where Pravda left off and warned U. S. allies they might become the first victims of any atomic war. It specifically singled out for warning Britain, France, West Germany, Italy, Turkey, Iran and Japan. But in Washington, President Eisenhower left open the ques tion of whether U. S. forces might be armed with atomic weapons if forced to fight Com munist aggression in the Middle East. Want Bettor Relations He said a final decision has not been reached, although his proposed "doctrine" for the Mid dle East promises to use force if necessary to battle Communist aggression. Mr. Eisenhower also said one of the chief aims of his admin istration during the next four years will be to achieve a better understanding with the Soviet Union. The father, displaying a black eye, dropped the assault charges after Arlie told him he would "leave home within 24 hours and never come back.' There were reports that Arlie also was involved in a beer-hall fight a few days ago following an argument over his three-year stay in China. (U.Ri Earl Junior Bonney, 32, the last of four men to remain free after escaping from the Linn county jail here last Sept. 7, is in cus tody in Las Vegas, Nev., Sheriff George K. Miller said todav. Miller said he had been in formed by Las Vegas police that Bonney was being held under the name of William Barrett on a vagrancy charge when a rou tine fingerprint check revealed his identity. Bonney has signed a waiver of extradition and will be brought to Linn county to face trial on the charge of assault and armed robbery growing out of the jail break, Miller said. At the time of his escape he was awaiting an ap peal on a life term meted out to him as an habitual criminal. Bonney and three other pris oners escaped the county jail here after slugging Jailer Lou Andrus and locking him in a cell. The other three escapees have been accounted for. The body of Daniel C. Ott was found in the Willamette river near Sa lem; Ernest Loring Gibson, 29, was captured by state police near Coquille after he forced a Bend taxi driver to drive him to Coos count, and James Ar thur Patton was captured near Los Angeles. Sfumbo Brothers Lose Skirmish Roseburg UR) The Stumbo clan yesterday lost another skir mish in its battle to hold owner ship of a I6V2 foot stretch of busy U.S. Highway 99 south of here. Circuit Judge Carl E. Wimber- ly denied a motion filed by Rob ert G. Stumbo contending that the State Highway Department condemnation suit represented a misjoinder of parties. Judge Wimberly said the state will be given an opportunity to file an amended complaint in the condemnation action to ac quire the 161-4 foot stretch of land it failed to gain title to nine years ago when the main north south arterial was constructed. The Stumbos earlier sub-divid ed their black-topped acreage and sold four-inch square plots for 52 each. More than 100 of the plots were disposed of be fore the highway department's court action halted the sale. The Stumbos brought their ownership contention into public view last summer when they chose a busy Sunday afternoon to string a rope barricade across the highway and announce they owned it. M. M. Huggins, Jackson County Chamber of Commerce presi dent, spoke on community and service. Mayor John Snider and members of the city council were among other guests. Snider was made an honorary member of the Kiwanis club by board of directors action Tues day. Huggins told of his belief that money businessmen put into a chamber of commerce should be considered an investment, not an expense. He declared that the free enterprise system cannot be taken for granted and spoke of the need for service to protect the heritage. Good management, a construc tive program, active committees and adequate budget and fin ances were listed by Huggins as ingredients in a "recipe" for a successful chamber of com merce.
