If you can walk, it will help." The field was nar rowed to this group who will rehearse for chorus of newest hotel to open in Las Vegas, Nev., the $15 million Tropicana. Girls are gathered around producer Monte Proser and actress Jayne Mansfield, who was there "as sort of a guide for the kind of figure we have in mind," Prose explained. Scien tists have been called into the battle against smog and their weapons include radar, an ex haust scrubber and an electronic smog predicter. A microwave transmitter has been placed atop Los Angeles city hall. Its beam is being used to probe smog particles in the hopes of learning what smog is made of. Another attack on smog Is the exhaust scrubber. This involves research on chemicals that will change the composition of auto mobile exhaust gas so it will not be harmful or create smog parti cles. Other research involves appli cation of an analog computer to the prediction of smog concentra tion and an investigation of schemes for ventilating the Los Angeles basin. Couple Keeps 1,000 Dogs in Their Home Enid. Okla . (U.R) More than 1,000 dogs in the house don't bother Mr .and Mrs. Lynn Rork. That's because they are all of the manufactured variety dogs of plastic, glass, pottery, cloth, rab bit skin, soap, etc. "The hobby began in 1936" Rork recalled. "I bought the first dog then an iron dog to be used as a door stop." This first dog is a prize one in the couple's collection. It still oc cupies its space beside the door of the Rork's home. "Most of the dogs have been given to us," Mrs. Rork ex plained. Their collection includes dogs from nearly every state in the union and representing some 20 countries. Sobieski today. The judge agreed to let Rose try to prove he was in complete control of his faculties recently when charged with drunk driving on the basis of a .246 drunkometer reading. A drunkometer reading of .150, which means there is .150 per cent alcohol in the blood stream, is legally considered a sure sign of intoxication. Drunkometer tests are allowed as evidence on a voluntary basis Instinctive Gesture Designs Get Favor Los Angeles (U.R) A Cali fornia woman who has complet ed a nine-year study of human gestures believes combat pilots would stand a better chance of survival if their equipment were designed more in line with In stinctive gesture patterns. Dr. Maria Constance Magin nis, a researcher at UCLA, cited the ejection seat in jet aircraft as an example. "The pilot is trained to sit rig idly .erect with his head held tightly against the seat back and not to move his head until he clears the plane," Dr. Maginnis pointed out. "Yet we know that the instinctive motion In the face of danger is to lower the head defensively." Trie researcher said that while it is true humans can be trained away from instinctive motion patterns, there is always the'dan ger that such training will go out the window tinder great stress. VIET NAM CUTS FORCES Tokyo U.R) Communist North Viet Nam has reduced its armed forces by 80.000 men, Radio Peiping reported today. It did not say how many re main under arms. in 46 states. The National Safety Council, basing its opinion on research at Michigan State uni versity, savs the tests are re liable. Rose contends, however, that while this may be true for "little men" and one-handed drinkers, it does not hold good for a two fisted elbow-bender like himself. Drunkometer 'Often Wrong' "My contention is that the drunkometer can be wrong, in fact is wrong in all but about 30 or 40 per cent of the cases," he said. "I'm a big man and I've been drinking a considerable amount regularly for a number of years," said Rose. The Tennessee program al ready passed in almost-final form by the House provides: 1. Separate school systems for White and Negro children whose parents voluntarily choose seg regated schools. 2. and 3. Strong powers for local school boards in assigning or transferring students from one school to another. 4. Local school boards may op erate schools jointly. Transportation To Conform 5. Makes school transportation laws conform to the new pro gram. The Tennessee Senate is also expected to give final okay to a "Tennessee Manifesto" criti cizing the U. S. Supreme Court's decision outlawing school segre gation. The House has already passed the bill. The Senate approved the school program within 24 hours after a federal judge had approved plans of the Nashville school board to integrate the first grade next fall. (U.R) A Navy DC4 transport which was ordered to Michigan because of bad weather conditions in Illin ois, crashed and burned in a blinding snowstorm Tuesday night, killing one passenger and injuring six crewmen. The big ship was carrying the body of a Michigan naval pilot who was killed in an air acci dent last week. The plane was- groping its way through a wind whipped snowstorm in an effort to make a landing at Willow Run Airport near here. It went down about two miles short of the run way and crashed into a gravel pit. Credit for Clue Bringing Arrest Of Mad Bomber Starts Hassle New York (U.R) A hassle de veloped today over who should get the credit for supplying the final clue that trapped "the mad bomber of Manhattan." Was it the police? The Con solidated Edison Company? Or both? Each claimed the credit at separate press conferences, short ly after George Metesky, a 54-year-old Waterbury, Conn., tool maker, was taken into custody and admitted he was the long sought "bomber," whose home made pipe bombs had injured 15 persons here since 1940. Officials of the giant utility, against which Metesky, a former employee had waged an unre lenting war of revenge, stoutly maintained that a 25-year-old woman clerical worker came across Metesky's file, noted simi larities with the mad bomber and that police were then noti fied. Police Refute Claim But Deputy Police Commis sioner Walter Arm insisted that a detective discovered the Me tesky file at Consolidated Edison which proved to be the key to the solution" of the 16-year mys tery that ended Tuesday with Metesky's arrest on charges that could send him to prison for "several lifetimes."' If Consolidated Edison's claim is proved, the clerk, Miss Alice Kelly, would be in line to re ceive $26,000 in reward money posted last month for informa tion leading to the arrest of the bomber whose activities set off an epidemic of fake bomb scares across the nation. Consolidated Edison officials said Miss Kelly, on her own in itiative, discovered the bomb er's file, containing a series of letters in which Metesky sought to satisfy his claim for a disabil ity incurred when he was gassed in 1931 while employed as a generator wiper at one of the Independence Judge In Critical Condition Portland '.U.R) Municipal Judge Albert Harding of Inde pendence was reported in criti cal condition in Good Samaritan hospital today. Attendants said he had been in a coma for 11 days. utility's New York plants. "We haven't got the full de tails yet. but we say it's, not so," Arm said. "The physical act of picking it out was done at the request of the police department." Police Commissioner Stephen Kennedy, who has been author ized to. desginate any reward recipient, said it would conduct a thorough investigation of th situation. There was a strong possibility, however, that the dispute would turn out to be academic, since, if Metesky is adjudged insane and committed to a mental hos pital no reward money could be offered. Metesky, the smiling, affable man who "nobody ever knew," today began undergoing psychia tric tests at Bellcvue hospital which ultimately will decide whether he will have to stand trial for his exploits or be com mitted to a mental hospital.
