Asking Queries from clients. Q. 1. What was the maiden name of the wife of John McCormack, celebrated tenor? 2. What is your recipe tor Irish coffee? A. 1. Mrs. McCormack's maiden name was Lily Foley. 2. The making of Irish coffee is very simple. Put three lumps of sugar and three fingers of Irish whisky into a cup nearly full of boiling black coffee. Then add cream. The important thing is to use the very best Irish whisky and coffee and cream of the same quality. Reason the Irish coffee is so bad in most places serving it in this country is because of the poor material used. Among The Married Is your wife over 40? My widowed daugh ter should go to work. Nora M. I would not be do ing right by the children. Mrs. J.R, My daughter's hus band died a year ago, leaving her with a small business and Jhree children, aged 12, 10 and 6. The business is very hard work for my daughter and provides her with little more than the es sentials. I feel she ought to sell the business and go to work. She can earn at least as much as she is now getting out of the business. Besides, it would be better for her morale. She would meet more people, have to take better care of her appearance. She is 38 years old and should think about marrying again. I have offered to take care of the children for the few hours between the time they get out of school and the time my daugh ter comes home, but Nora says It's not a good idea. Nora M. My mother .is very generous, but she is 69 years old and not in very good health. She can't keep up with three active youngsters. It's too much for her and 1 would worry. I also feel I would not be doing right by the children. O&C Timber Sales' Fall Below Record Portland Sales of timber in 1956 on O and C forest lands managed by the bureau of land management in western Oregon were below the record set in 1955 in both volume and value. Virgil T. Heath. Oregon state supervisor has reported. Heath said that final tabula tions for the 1956 calendar year showed a timber sale total of 569.779.000 board 'feet valued at S20.372. 634.66. In 1955 timber sales from O and C lands set a record of 603.229.000 board feet valued at S21. 379.769.60. The Oregon state supervisor said the average bid price per thousand board feet for 1956 was S36.34, compared to $37.11 in 1955. Heath's report corrected pre dicted figures issued late in De cember before final tabulations could be made. shock to them. I want them to I have the security of knowing I I am around. It's true that the business is i very hard work and sometimes i keeps me on my feet until I am j I exhausted. Even on Sundays I j am busy with the bookkeeping ' and other details. It's discourag ing, too, because I can't see what can be done to make it more profitable. But I feel that at ; least I am always on hand if the children need or want me. The Council: Nora shows that her thinking is on the right track, but her practical situation appears to be a particularly un happy one and some adjustment should be made. While there is much to be said for being "always on hand" for 1 the children, a mother who ex- hausts herself mentally and phy sicallly is really only half there. If she feels discouraged as well, the children will sense it and Nora will not be giving them the feeling of security for which she is now making such a big sacri fice. Nora should seek some expert business advice to find out whether she can make her busi ness more profitable at less ex pense of her energies. It is pos sible that she is overlooking some simple angle that someone with more experience could easily spot. She should be left with enough time and energy to be a real companion to her chil dren during the evenings and on week ends. If it is impossible to do this, Nora and her children might be better off if. she went to work. The entire situation might be ex plained to the children so that they realize their mother is go ing to work in order to be able to give more of herself to them. They might rise to the situation and become much more respon sible so that they would be less of a burden to their grand mother. Perhaps a neighbor or a responsible high school or col lege girl could be called upon to do the job of supervising for those few hours. If Nora can return to her chil dren with a clear mind in the evening, she will find herself really enjoying their company and thus be able to bring more pleasure into their lives as welL (Coupyrighi 1957.
