They have been led to be lieve by Rus sian propa ganda that our Food and Drug Admin istra tion people Dr Alvarez have been willfully denying Americans the right to be treated with this vaccine. Actually, the purpose of the Food and Drug Admin istration is to protect our peo ple from untested medicines which have no value or which might even be dangerous. I just received a letter from Dr. Thomas L. Willman, Meai- cal Director of the National Mul tiple Sclerosis Society, of 270 Park Ave., New York, 17, who tells me that they have had some studies made of the Rus sian vaccine, and the results were not encouraging. Also, the Multiple Sclerosis Society has heard from research workers at Bothenburg, in Sweden men who have studied the medicine, and have not been well impress ed with it. They thought it un likely that the vaccine has any value. They said that some medi cal travelers who, when in Rus sia, visited Margoulis and Shou bladze, were not impressed with what they had seen. The United States Food and Drug authori ties cannot .give a permit for any new vaccine to be used in this country until they have some information on the com position of the substance, and some assurance that it will be safe to use; A Drug That Will Help Bleeders I am happy to learn that one of America's fine drug houses is now producing for sale the fibrinogen fraction of human blood, for lack of which some persons with a hereditary defect in their blood-clotting mechan ism, nearly bleed to death. Un fortunately, it is very expensive since the amount necessary for the treating of one patient is derived from blood taken dur ing 25 bleedings, and the proc essing and testing of the mate rial takes 3 months of ticklish work. But it is very good to know that this life-saving mate rial is now available. Pendleton Publisher Visits in Medford J. W. (Bud) Forrester Jr., edi tor and publisher of the Pendle ton East Oregonian, was a Med ford visitor Thursday and Fri day. He is on a tour of the state, gathering information for a se ries of articles for his newspaper on the economy of the state, and the outlook for development. His tour so far has taken him through the Columbia river, Wil lamette valley. Pacific coast and southern Oregon counties, and he will tour central and eastern Oregon before returning to Pendleton. Fortin Moves to Medford Headquarters Jack Fortin, McLeod warden for the southwest district of the state forestry department, has been moved to the Medford head quarters. He will be a year-around warehouseman. Fortin has work ed for almost 25 years in both state and federal fire control work. Walter (Buzz) Moran is now a full-time forest warden for the southwest district. He has been a seasonal warden since 1953 after serving three years as a crew member. A new guard station at Wil liams and a new crewhouse at the Pleasant creek guard station are being completed in the dis trict. The Williams station re places one damaged by high water in 1955. Painting and other minor work will finish the Pleas ant Creek crewhouse. The old crewhouse is being torn down. Only about 3.5 per cent of Egypt's 386.000 square miles are cultivated. THE BEST . .
