Applegate, has been nominated for president of the Oregon 4-H leaders associa tion, which will meet next week in Corvallis, according to Miss Marjories Hattan and Glenn Klein, county 4-H agents. Mrs. John Bohnert. Central Decision Discussion Groups Start Meeting For Program Sunday C-.l-.-l . ... Point, has been nominated for state treasurer of the association. The county 4-H agents, the two nominees and 11 other 4-H club leaders will leave Jackson county Monday to attend the conference, which will conclude Thursday. Portland Anyone can or ganize a "Great Decisions . . . 1957" discussion group, the key to the program. The groups usually include from six to 14 people; they are self -organized, self -run, and usually meet in a home, com bining world affairs with a sociable get-together. In 1956, housewives, lawyers, businessmen, salesmen, ranch ers, bus drivers, beauty oper ators, secretaries people repre senting every part of the com munity organized "Decisions" discussion groups. Common Thing Most of the groups had one thing in common; they were friends, neighbors and mostly couples. Most of them had never before seriously discussed for eign policy, but about 100 per cent of them stayed through the series with regular attendance of better than 80 per cent. There are other ways of or ganizing groups without meet ing in homes. Examples which have been tried include a group of parents who met at church on Sunday while their children attended Sunday schools; use of "Decisions" topics for discus sion by regular adult and youth church groups; building of week ly civic club programs around the questions; a community "town hall" meeting and a group of professional people setting up a twice-weekly luncheon meet ing. Started two years ago and ex panded in Oregon this year 1o Great Decisions . . . 1957," it is designed to help citizens in form themselves about U. S. policy and the international sit uation, and to give them a chan nel to let their leaders know what they think about it. Eight-Week Program "Decisions" is an eight-week program, beginning Jan. 20. which will focus attention and provide facts on eight key for eign policy issues the United States faces in 1957. Background material for the informal discussion groups is provided by a series of ei?ht "fact sheets," prepared by the Foreign Policy association, na- 1 tional sponsors of "Great De cisions." The FPA is a nonpart isan, nonprofit organization founded in 1918 to stimulate in terest in and provide informa- j tion on foreign policy. Basic Information Each fact sheet gives basic information on the week's topic, and presents several policy al ternatives. The sheets are set up in discussion form, and provide no answers individuals may j draw their own conclusions. Pur- i pose of the sheets is to do away j with the need for trained dis- cussion leaders or foreign policy experts for each group and they are designed for every citizen. Fact sheets are available in Jackson county at the Medford Public library. Mrs. John Ous terhout of Eagle Point is chair man of the Jackson county "Great Decisions" group. Smith, Med ford; Mrs. Perry Strom, Med ford; A. T. Lathrop, Central Point: Armin Richter. Ruch; and Mpi. Ivan Skyrman, Central Point. Theme of the conference will be "Working With Older 4-H Club Members." Keynote speak er will be Dr. Ed Aiton of Wash ington, D.C., national 4-H club leader. The majority of females born under the sign of Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) are psychomats or so say the star gazers. In case you are not famil iar with the term, it is applied to people whose minds strongly influence their bodies. As for example, a man who gets indi gestion every time his mother-in-law comes to spend a week end at his house is a psychomat. So is a fellow who gets a splitting headache when he blowia three horse parlay. Or a woman who can't go to sleep after seeing a film starring Gregory Peck. Please Note "It is a play about poverty, want, squalor, degeneracy, piti ful helplessness and grotesque tragic lusts." A very depressing description. Sounds like a play nobody would care much about seeing. Yet that is Erskine Cald well's description of his play "Tobacco Road." which had a Broadway run of over 3,000 per formances! Horsea and Women Are you a bachelor? Does the girl you currently have most on your mind use a holder when smoking cigarettes? If she does, she is a smart girl. Ask her to marry you before somebody beats you to it. Sixty-nine per rent of cigarettes in the United States are smoked by women. A check of the situation, reveals the average woman, who does not use a holder, smokes only ha"!f of a cigarette. The rest is tossed away. A wasteful habit. So if your girl uses a holder, it indicates she is inclined to be economical. She is also contrib uting to the cleanliness of the community by not leaving any sloppy-looking, lipstick-smeared butts around. Sidelights Where in this country is the best English spoken?
