SIX MEDFORD (OREGOrT) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday, January 17, 1957 Has Time Changed Ingrid Bergman's Critics? Answer To Be Provided at Saturday Banquet W.Aitnr't not: Ihii I th cnn4 in a rt of Uire articles on Ingrid Brman. Br JACK V. FOX Unittd Pimi Corrnpondtnt New York UP; Seven years ago Edwin C. Johnson of Colo rado took the floor of the Unit ed States Senate to demand that Ingrid Bergman never be per mitted to set foot on American soil again. Senator Johnson said he had been enjoying movies for more than 40 years and that Miss Bergman had become his own favorite actress of all time until she ran off with Roberto Rossellini. Johnson excoriated Miss Berg man then as "our most popular but pregnant movie queen" and said her "unconventional free- love conduct must be regarded for what it is an assault upon the institution of marriage." This week the former sena tor was asked how he felt now. "I still think the speech was a pretty good stand." he said, "but perhaps I've softened with age. I guess I'm glad she's com ing back . . . time changes every thing." Her for Award Whether time has changed oth er bitter critics of Miss Bergman may be seen this week end when the actress comes to New York for 34 hours to accept the award of the film critics for her performance in "Anastasia." Miss Bergman was at the top of the movie pinnacle when she left in March, 1949. She had won the Academy Award for her performance in "Gaslight." Her leading men, one after an other, had been such stars as Bing Crosby, Gregory Peck, Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, Charles Boyer, Spencer Tracy and the late Humphrey Bogart. But she became the object of a great hue and cry in Amer ica when it became known that she had left her husband. Dr. Peter Lindstrom, and 10-year-old daughter, Pia, for Italian director Rossellini. The criticism reached its peak in February, 1950. when Miss Bergman gave birth to Rossel-1 lini's son in Rome while she was still married to Lindstrom. She and Rossellini have since mar ried and had two other children twin girls. Never Covered Up Miss Bergman never tried to cover up her conduct or excuse it away. "One women's group wrote to me," she said last August, "that I had once been a perfect example for mothers and now I was a horrible example. They saw me in 'Joan of Arc' and thought I was a saint. I'm not. I'm just a human being." Now she is in for a week end such as America reserves for its celebrities who have strayed From the time her plane lands on Saturday until she takes off for Paris again on Sunday, Miss Bergman is in for considerable chaos. The high point of her visit is the Saturday night presents tion at Sardi's restaurant, in the heart of the Broadway theatrical district, of the film critic awards, Winners along with Miss Berg man are actor Kirk Douglas, producer Mike Todd, director John Huston and writer S. J. Perleman. Also invited to the buffet sup per are a host of other movie and theatrical people now New York among them Fred ric March, David Wayne, She! lev Winters, Charles Laughton Carol Baker, Eli Wallach, Kim Hunter. Faye Emerson, Arlene Dahl, Edward G. Robinson, Jeff Chandler, Marlene Dietrich NBC's Steve Allen scored something of a coup in his week ly struggle with Ed Sullivan by lining up Miss Bergman as well as other award winners for a filmed television interview which he will show the next night. Sullivan, who has been try ing for some time to get Miss Bergman to appear "live" , on his show, asked his audience last July whether they would like to see her. Suliivan said this week he got more than 10.000 letters and "they went slightly against her percentage-wise. Those who wanted to see her, SHADY COVE-TRAIL Free Polio Shots Monday By EVALYN P. Those who went against her said: "She left her husband and had an affair with another man. Why should we support her?" Sullivan said his sentiments were with the first group and that the success of her movie, "Anastasia," has vindicated that feeling. "The public has shown that the tide of sympathy has turned in her favor," he said. "They're seeing the picture. There has been no sentiment against her. Nothing from the churches or the Legion of Decency or any thing like that." Churchmen say it is highly unlikely that any major church group will criticize her during her visit although some indi vidual clergymen may do so. The private reaction of many church people is that criticism would be very unfortunate. One churchman commented that Christ spoke about throwing the first stone.
