40,000 Stateless Jews Face Expulsion or Evacuation From Egypt London (U R) Forty thou-with stories of persecution, mis ing offices, the exit visa depart ment of the Interior Ministry opened three extra offices and another shipload of refugees is due in Naples next Sunday. More are expected to follow. Promised Land Like their ancient forefathers who were led out of Egypt by Moses in the days of the Phar aohs, their objective is still the "promised land." As one refugee said in Naples, "For us now only Israel remains as the final place of settling." Herbert A. Friedman, execu tive head of the United Jewish Appeal, says that Jewish agen cies have launched a $10 million emergency drive to help Jewish refugees from Hungary, Egypt and North Africa. He says that the entire Jew ish community in Egypt faces expulsion. Although organiza tions are prepared to help the Egyptian Jews resettle in almost any part of the world, most have their eyes turned toward the Jewish state, already crowded Egypt's Director of Informa tion, Col. Abdel Kader Hatem denies that any Jew holding Egyptian nationality has been, or will be expelled. He told the United Press in Cairo that the Egyptian consti tution forbids the deportation ot Egyptian citizens or withdraw al or their nationality. He admitted however, that 280 stateless Jews have been ear marked for expulsion for "con siderations of state security." . sand stateless Jews lace expul sion or evacuation from Egypt in a traffic flight rivalling the exodus led by Moses 3,400 years ago. Nearly 1,000 refugees already have arrived in Naples, .Italy, treatment and loss of their pos sessions the aftermath of the Israeli invasion of Egypt. Egyptian authorities deny that all the Jews must leave. They dispute the stories of persecu tion. But long queues have formed outside airline and ship book- and living in a state of tension surrounded by hostile Arabs. 40.000 Refugees There are an estimated 40,000 stateless Jews in Egypt, many of whose families have lived there for generations. There are 3,500 others who have Egyptian citizenship. 4-H Club News v4 Jolly Joei Club The Jolly Joes 4-H club at Gold Hill met Friday, Jan. 11, with all members but two pres ent. The afternoon was spent enjoying a party, as we had no Christmas party. We played games and had refreshments of ice cream, punch and cup cakes. The door prize was won by Zona Call. The prize was a banty chicken dressed in a hat and apron. Next meeting will be spent sewing. Marie Jones Reporter W.iiiid. Clubs The Westside 4-H clubs met at Westside school on Jan. 7. Danny Gilman, president, called the meeting to order. Leslie Kellow led the flag salute. Mrs. Gibson gave us information on new rec ord books and passed out old books. It was decided to hold our com bined clubs meetings every oth er month. We talked about giv ing some deserving family a bas ket of food for Easter. We planned a cake sale for Jan. 12, proceeds to go to March of Dimes. This sale netted $16.60. Refreshments were served by refreshment committee. Portland December building in Medford showed a six per cent increase over December, 1955, and a 25 per cent increase over the November total for 1956, according to a report of the Equitable Savings and Loan association's statistical depart ment, Portland. Building valuation in Decem ber, 1956, was $349,575, com pared to $331,212 for November 1956, and $279,002 for Decem ber, 1955. December building in the Pa cific Northwest showed a 47 per cent increase over December, 1955, the report showed. Dollar volume of dwelling construc tion showed a 37 per cent gain during the period. Total volume was $21,203,999 with dwelling construction $5,354 of the total. In December total permits were 1 per cent below a year ago and residential permits were up 8 per cent from 1955. December permits for the Northwest area totaled 3,121, of which 402 were for dwellings. Vienna (U.R) Posters have appeared on walls in revolt crippled Budapest calling on anti-Soviet citizens to prepare for a new uprising 10 days from now. Washington (U.R) Adm. Ar thus W. Radford has told Con gress that the United States Probably has widened its mili tary lead over Russia slightly during the past 72 months. GRANGE Lake Creek Grange Lake Creek Grange members voted to change the meeting night to the second Friday of the month, at 8:30 p.m. It is hoped by this change that mem bers having children in school will be able to attend Grange more often. Many parents do not approve of their children being out on school evenings and then arising early the next morning. The final voting will be held at the February meeting. Lloyd George, acting as in stalling officer, installed Faye Burrell, worthy lecturer; Faye George, chaplain; Claus Charley, treasurer; and Ernest Burrell, executive committee. Worthy Lecturer Faye Bur rell presented a short program after the closing of Grange and Lloyd George read a poem. Mr. and Mrs. Leland Charley gave a skit entitled "Mama's Purse." Lecturer Burrell announced that everyone is to come to the next meeting with facts on their heart. February is heart month. A contribution will be sent for the March of Dimes drive. The next meeting will be Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. V.
