Newspaper Page TextNews About Books From the Library Many Medford and Jackson county residents have resolved to take advantage of the re sources of their public library early in the new year, to judge from the number of borrowers' registrations recently received Mrs. Marjorie Shepler, head of the circulation department, reported that in the first 10 days of the year 236 borrowers applied for new cards. Of these 157 were registered in the adult department, and 79 In the junior department of the library. A total of 139 new volumes were added to the collection dur ing this period, according to Mrs. Charlene Tarvin. Of these, 148 were placed in the adult de partment. Donations of books were made by Fred B. McKee nd W. Y. Seeding, Planting Program Completed By Forest Service Cave Junction A six-man United States Forest Service crew, working out of the Illinois Valley ranger station, wound up the annual re-seeding and tree planting program on cut-over land here last week. According to Winston Tuttle, acting district ranger, the men have planted a total of 284 acres to Ponderosa pine over a two month period. Other Work Poisoning for rodents and spot planting of seeds was carried out on Page mountain in November. The seeds were especially treated with a rodent repellant and coat ed with aluminum to discourage birds. Total Page mountain area either re-seeded or re-planted with seedlings amounted to 77 acres, Tuttle reported. Other U.S. Forest Service land re-planted after the 1956 cut in cluded 16 acres at Long Gulch Lakes, and 42 acres at Oak Pas ture. An additional 149 acres of USFS land, where planting had failed in the past, were planted again in 1956 to Ponderosa pine. More Acres Covered The year's program covered slightly more than the average number of acres planted each year by the Forest Service. Ap proximately 25,000,000 board feet of timber were cut on USFS land in the Illinois valley dur ing 1956, Tuttle said. A total of 100 acres are be ing held over for spring plant ing. At Long Gulch Lakes, 40 acres will be planted to Douglas fir seedlings, while approximate ly 60 acres at Crazy Peak are being reserved for aerial seed ing to Ponderosa pine. Tuttle said. Tuesday.
