EAGLE POINT Family Has Housewarming By LOUISE M. BERG Eagle Point About 25 peo ple gathered at the new home of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin M. Hayes on the Bigham road Saturday evening for a surprise house warming party. The couple re ceived as gifts a fireplace set and copper wood basket to com pliment their new fireplace. Cof fee and cake was served. A surprise stork shower was given to Mrs. Art Thompson by the faculty wives on Friday aft ernoon at the home of Mrs. Glenn Hale. Mrs. Thompson re ceived many gifts for the new comer. Mrs. P. J. Hocfft and daugh ter June, of Medford. and Mrs. James Dopp of Camp White were visitors in the John R. Tyrell home this past week. Mrs. John Huffman will en tertain at a neighborhood party on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. un til noon. Coffee and cake will be served, and proceeds will be donated to the March of Dimes. chosen to represent the U. S. Navy at the Olympics, but due to the sudden outbreak in the far east, the trip was cancelled. John returned to San Diego, where he will return to his ship. Mrs. Don Ullom is confined to her home with heppitias. Georgia Sue Wideman is spending the weekend with friends in Yreka. Mr. Red Thompson is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Jackson for a few days. Joanne Barritt underwent an appendectomy in the Rogue Val ley Memorial hospital recently and will return to her home in a few days. Portland Police Study Knife Sale Ordinance Portland UJ.Pj Police juvenile officers Saturday were studying a proposed ordinance which would ban the sale and possession of switchblade knives in Portland. The proposed two-part ordi nance would make it unlawful for persons under 18 years of age to possess any knife with a blade longer than 3Vi inches. The law also would prohibit the sale and possession of any switchblade knife. The ordinance is backed by police because of the growing number of crimes among juve niles using the switchblade, or spring release, knives. The U.S. army abolished flog ging as punishment in 1861 after public protests. State Police Report Three Accidents in County Friday Three accidents in Jackson county were reported to . state police Friday and one of the accidents resulted in hospitaliza tion of Jack W. Vance, 25, of 518 Beatty st., Medford. Police said Vance suffered a broken right leg and a head wound when his car went over a 30-foot bank on Highway 66 near Tub Springs state park Fri day afternoon. Over Bank According to the report, he had stopped his car behind a truck and was' unable to pro ceed on the upgrade because of packed snow. Police said he started backing, then skidded across the highway and over the bank. He told officers he tried to jump before the ve hicle went over the bank, but the car carried him with it. He was taken by Medford Ambulance service to Sacred Heart hospital where his condi tion is reported "good." The ac cident was reported by a high way maintenance truck driver. Truck Accident A pickup truck, operated by Jerry R. Gaston, Concord, Calif., blew a fire and went over a bank on Highway 99 near the California state line at 6:17 p.m. Friday, state police said. Neither Gaston nor his passenger. Miss Joan Marie Winters, 17, Seattle, was injured, according to the report. A strip of ice was blamed for Sunday. January 13, 1957 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE an accident on Highway 99 at the Tolo bridge at 8:53 a.m. Fri day, involving a car operated by Sydney A. Gay, 40, Grants Pass, and a tractor operated by Billy Joe Mitchell, 33, Marysville, Calif. Cars Collide According to state police. Gay was traveling south on the bridge when his car hit some ice and spun around about 100 feet from the south end of the bridge. The car collided with Mitchell's tractor and the right front wheel of the tractor apparently ran across Gay's car, officers said. No injuries were reported though the car was reported demolished. About 28 percent of fabrics used in the U. S. today are of man-made fibers. CO Office Relocated In Courthouse Annex The Jackson county civil de fense office has been moved from the basement floor of the old courthouse structure to the low er floor of the courthouse annex, according to Chester Wendt, county commissioner and presi dent of the county CD organiza tion. Access to the new office, lo cated in the west end of the an nex, may be gained through the Laurel st. entrance, Wendt ex- , plained. The move was made to allow more space for transaction of civil defense business. The former CD office will be occu pied by the Jackson County Ag ricultural Stabilization and Con servation committee, it was stated. The Red Cross in 1955 issued 202,100 certificates to persons who had completed the pre scribed courses in home nursing practices. The U. Mrs. Roy Kenner who recent ly suffered a slight heart at tack has returned to her home from the Osteopathic hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Murray R. Bart ling and Mr. anad Mrs. Ira Wool folk attended the Grange meet ing this week in Central Point. : A meeting of the Jackson County Parent Teachers associ ation will be held in Ashland Jan. 16 at 10 a.m. in the Epis copal Parish hall. A work shop will be conducted and everyone ! Is invited. Linda Malloroy returned to Oregon State college after vis iting her parents in Eagle Point. Mrs. Lester Bradshaw prcsi dent of the Jackson County Council f the PTA flew to Port land this week to attend a state meeting. , Mr. Raymond Charters who was injured in a logging accident several weeks ago has returned to his home. Bonnie Etxel entertained thf Faculty Bridge club this past week. Jessie Callaghan. Evelyn Ousterhout and Tena Olsen won prizes. John Huffman, son of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Huffman on the Crater Lake Highway recently surprised his parents with a vis it. John, who is in the Navy, has spent seven months in the far east, and northern Japan. He was attached to the Lexington while it was anchored across the bay from the Communists in Hong Kong.
