Mavo Foundation W. Can Still We Ara Old Study When e5 Us Aivrex Opening my copy of the Stan ford Review, I see that Mrs. Catharine T. Davis of the class of 1904 just received a de gree of Master of Arts from the Fresno State College. Obviously, she if she grad uated first in 1904 must now be 70 or older. She says she maintained a B plus average, and the only difficulty she ex perienced was that it took her a little longer to study and get things than it did when she was young. , In today's mail, my secretary found a letter from an irate woman who is out of all patience with the idea that any woman should want to find some useful work after her responsibilities are ended, and she has moved out of the big house into a small apartment. She fumes at the thought of anyone in that com fortable state foolish enough to go out hunting for a job. She thinks that any woman not soft in the head will just be happy to stretch out and rest! Durling (Distributed by King Future! Syndicate Inc.) Were you a prematurely born I baby? Neither was I. My ar rival at our home on East 120th : st. and Pleasant ave., Manhat tan, was strictly according to schedule. Don't know how much I weighed at birth. It is claimed by experts on the subject that those who are prematurely born are usually better looking and have more of a chance for suc cess in life than the average child. Sir Winston Churchill was prematurely born. He weighed three pounds at birth. Horses and Women A woman who has mastered the fine art of conversation is a rarity. That's because so few females know how to listen. A truly clever woman not only knows how to listen but has a talent for inspiring the conver sation of a man. This makes the talker much pleased with himself and causes him to con sider the woman a delightful companion. Clever feminine con versationalists never lack for dates or marriage proposals. How right Edward Young was when he observed: A dearth of words a woman need not fear, t But tis a task indeed for her to learn to hear. In that the skill of conversa tion lies, That shows, or makes her both polite and wise. Asking Queries from clients. Q. Paris has many night clubs that serve only champagne. Has New York ever had such a club? A. The Cork Room, a night club operat ed bv Koster & Bial at 24th st. and 6th ave., served only I champagne. Q. California turf handicappers have a much high er percentage of winners than eastern selectors. Why? A. Cali fornians are furnished with names of all riders in advance. Eastern selectors are not. Trying to select racing winners with out knowing who the jockeys will be is like trying to pick the winner of a baseball game without knowin? who the pitch ers will be. In brief, it is a ridiculous, inexcusable situation. Guide lo Gals Women born under Taurus (April 21-May 20) make good wives if firmly handled and expertly trained by a man of strong character. They are in tensely affectionate when prop erly inspired but at other times are slightly frigid. Their hearts are frequently broken. They are great torch carriers. When mar ried they want their life to be one long honeymoon and expect their husbands to hug and kiss them and say, "I love you" a minimum of six times a day. Taurian females become care less as to their figures. They begin to bulge, especially in the hips. Passing By John Hay Witney. Distinguish ed socialite and versatile man of business. Recently appointed United States Ambassador to Great Britain. His father, Payne Whitney, left a fortune of $178 million. I believe this is the largest estate ever probated in the United States. John Hay, popularly known as Jock , re ceived over S60 million as his share of his papa's estate. Asides The most annoying of all tip chiselers is the bartender who returns your change on a silver trav. That is really a form of panhandling . . . Nobody seems to know why Franz Schubert didn't finish his "Unfinished SvmDhony." Anyway, it wasn't because he was lazy. In one year Schubert composed five operas, two symphonies, two masses and 146 songs! FREE Turkey Dinner bEE THE Groceteria Ad On Page 6 less many will feel that way, while others won't. Some will want to go on being useful, or they will find that to do nothing can be horribly boring. I agree with the wise writers who think that one of the most important ingredients of a happy life old or young is a feeling of use fulness. Help for People with Shingles W. H. Reeves, of Burbank, Calif., writes me that once when he had a case of severe shingles and no one helped him, a doctor quickly cured him by spraying the blisters with ethy chloride, a powerful local anesthetic. In Reeves' case the shingles soon disappeared. I can easily see how this local anesthetic could give relief for an hour or two, but it is hard to understand how it could give any lasting relief. However, it might be worth trying. Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for information or to attempt to diagnose by mail. (Released by The Register and Tribune Syndicate, 1957) Strange As It Seems by Elsi Hix Wasco County Tax Assessments Upheld Salem (U.R) The State Supreme Court has held that taxes assessed against the Northern Wasco County People's Utility District by the State Tax Commission from 1950 to 1953 were lawfully assessed. The court ruled further that statutes subjecting PUD prop erty to taxation are not arbi trary or unreasonable and are constitutional. The PUD had sought to se cure a -declaratory decree that it was not subject to taxation. The court also decided that the Legislature had the power to ehaet the tax statutes which the plaintiff challenged and that they did not violate any constitutional restriction and that taxes for all years were lawfully levied.
