(U.R) The second disastrous lire in less than a week wrecked a section of the Freeport business district tcday. No exact estimate of the dam ages was available immediately, but officials said it probably would top SI million. The blaze broke out Tuesday night in the Stukenberg depart ment store and was brought un der control five hours later. Smoke billowed through the department store and it quick ly erupted into a sheet of flame. The three-story structure and the adjoining E and W clothing store were destroyed. Cause was not determined. Three other buildings suffer ed smoke and water damage. A huge crowd, at one time estimated at 10,000, swarmed over the area. Less than a week afo anoth er blaze destroyed a cafe, a photo and hobby shop and law offices in a building less than a block away. Authorities said they did not connect the two fires at the mo ment but a full investigation is planned. Chiloquin Boys Hurt In Shooting Mishap Klamath Falls U.R) One of two teen-age Chiloquin youths injured in a shooting accident Monday was reported in "fair" condition at a local hospital to day while the other boy was reported in "good" condition. Deputy Sheriff Alvie Young blood said Johnny Cole, 15, was struck in the arm by a bullet which then entered his chest and lodged behind his heart. The other boy hurt was Eldon Cress, 18. His condition was described as good. Officers said te two boys were playing with a .22 calibre rifle in the home of Robert Lloyd Ferris, 13, and Burton Dwayne Ferris, 12, when the younger Ferris boy pulled the trigger of the gun he believed to be unloaded. New York Man Donor Of Museum Art Piece Eugene (U.R) The Uni versity of Oregon revealed here yesterday that Winston Guest, a New York airlines executive, was the donor of a $75,000 hand-wrought jade pagoda now installed in the University's Museum of Oriental Art. Identity of the donor had been kept secret by the University until the opening ceremony of the Festival of the Arts yester day. Guest purchased the pagoda from C. T. Loo, a Chinese art firm. It is believed to have been built around 1709 in the Hsi dynasty. Bucket of Bucks Dance Offers Prizes Several valuable prizes were announced today for the Bucket of Bucks dance, to be held at Rogue Valley ball room Thurs day night as a benefit for the March of Dimes. The grand prize, to be award ed at midnight, will be a port able 14-inch television set and lamp, the announcement said. Other prizes, to be awarded every 30 minutes during the evening, include a deep fat fry er, electric skillet, electric pop corn popper, steam iron, a $15 certificate for dry cleaning, free dancing lessons for a year, val ued at S180, a six-year-old pink and white camelia bush and. a ham or turkey. Two bands will furnish music for modern and western danc ing and several popular valley entertainers will be on the program. Yellowjackeis Cause Fire in California Field Orangevale, Calif. (U.R) Three fire trucks were called out here because a swarm of yellow- jackets got angry. William Pettigraw of Orange- vale had decided to burn the wasps out of a hole. He inserted a burning gasoline-soaked rag into the nest with a stick. The yellowjackets took, a dim view of this and headed for their attacker. He fled, dropping the rag and setting the field ablaze. BLAST RIPS APARTMENT BUILDING Seven persons were injured when a shattering explosion ripped this apartment building in San Francisco. The blast occurred when Verlin Bishop, 35, who was critically injured, lit a cigaret near a plugged, but leaking gas line as he painted the wall prior to installation of a new stove. - . : Vets Council Seeks Senate Veterans Affairs Group The Veterans .Allied council of Jackson county Monday ap proved a resolution to organize a veterans committee in the Sen ate. The resolution will be for warded to Oregon Senators in Washington, according to Pat rick Graham, council secretary. The council noted that veter ans affairs are now handled by the Senate finance committee, and discussions have been held recently on forming an individ ual committee to handle veter ans affairs, such as the House veterans committee. Representatives of the vet erans council said one advantage of an individual committee for veterans affairs is that the fi nance committee has enough work in finance alone and that veterans affairs . has become secondary. The council also decided, to continue its drive for medical and surgical beds at the Camp White Veterans Domiciliary. Organizations represented at the meeting included the Jack son county Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 15, Crater Lake Veterans of For eign Wars, Camp Wh'e CFW, Medford Barracks of Veterans of World War I, and Camp White Barracks of Veterans of WWI.
