An Army Reservist who at tends a two-hour weekly drill gets a full day's pay for that drill about six dollars for a ser geant and five for a corporal. Pay varies with length of service. long wanted to shorten and style my hair, I wanted much to do this before I married my hus band; and the only reason I had it done when I did was that my father died and left me some money. Now, I can afford to go to a beauty parlor every week!" THE BLOOD PRESSURE OF A GIRAFFE A group of research workers from Duke University just re turned from Africa where they studied the blood pressure of a giraffe and found what they had expected namely, that in order to push ,blood up the twelve feet of neck into the brain of the animal, the. heart has to pump extra hard, and the blood pressure has to be extra high. Hundreds of people ask me why they get dizzy and perhaps have to hang onto something for a minute when they quickly stand up after having been ly ing down. The answer is that in man there is a nervous mechan ism which causes the blood pres sure to adjust when a person stands up. A low pressure does no harm when a man is lying flat in bed with his head on al most the same level with his heart. But when he stands up, if there weren't a mechanism to cause the arteries in his legs quickly to contract, he would "bleed down into his legs" and he might black-out because his brain would not be getting enough blood. In a normal per son this mechanism functions so quickly that the man doesn't know he has it; but in some of us, and especially those who are tall and thin and nervous, the mechanism works so slowly that when we stand up quickly we become dizzy. This doesn't mean that we have a permanently low blood pressure or that anything need be done about it. I wouldn't know how to go about curing this difficulty with blood pres sure that comes for. a moment on standing, even if a person much wanted me to. Perhaps he could wear a tight corset to hold more blood in his abdo men. It may cheer some persons to know that I have had this discomfort for over 55 years, ever since s, a boy I worked in a library. I always had trouble lor a moment when I straightened up after hunting for a book on the bottom shelf. I sometimes still get this type of dizziness for a moment, but it is no worse than it was when I was a boy.
