Dr. Paul S. Martin, chief cura tor of anthropology of the Chi cago Natural History Museum, led the expedition to the South west, his 22nd venture in the rea. "It was a profitable . . . sea son," Dr. Martin said, "and has given us clues for excavations in future years which should open the way to many new dis coveries about the early tribes of the Southwest." The 1956 expedition was lim ited to surface sampling to ob tain as wide a variety of period representations as possible for use as guides in excavations planned for the next few years. For a week 750 dele gates from all over the world discussed the problems of ag ing, and the problems of how to take care of aging persons.. They tried to figure out why people and animals grow old and die; they talked about the diseases that -are common in the aged; they talked about blood fats that seem to produce heart attacks and strokes; and they talked about retirement, and the prob lems of caring well for elderly people. As I went about the country I followed my usual custom and kept looking into the faces of people to see if they were happy. I was impressed by the fact that many of the persons I saw in the big automobiles, which are so tremendously expensive in that land, looked unhappy and dissat isfied, while many of the poor people looked merry and con tented., I can still see in my mind's eye a sweet little old couple: gray-haired, stoutish and about 75 years old. Probably when they were young they had so little food that they couldn't grow very tall. Their clothes were old and several times patched, and they hadn't had a pair of shoes between them but they were trudging along so hap pily, hand in hand, just like a couple of lovers. It did me good to watch them. Obviously, they had found much contentment in hard work done side by side. Children Happy In the park opposite my hotel, on the eve of one of their great festivals, there were hundreds of children running about very hap pily. They were so affectionate with their parents, and the par ents were so loving with them. A child of-seven or so would run up to a small child of three and grab him and hug him. Often in a mountain village, I would see a little girl of eight carrying around in her arms her little brother or sister aged two or three. One day I watched seven or eight children playing on the edge of a sidewalk. These was an active little cherub of a boy about four years of age who tend ed every few minutes to stray out into the busy street. Every time an automobile started to whiz by, his brother, aged 8 or 9, grabbed him and pulled him back onto the sidewalk. As I watched all these people so happy and so affectionate with one another I feared a psych iatrist would starve to death in such a neighborhood. There would not be enough Oedepus or Electra complexes to go around Everyone was too- happy. The happiest child I saw was able to teach me much. As I passed through a little mountain village. I saw a naked young ster of four, playing in the mud in front of his father's thatched shack. With the help of a bit of string he was pulling behind him a chip of wood which ev idently in his imagination was as beautiful as any Cadillac. He was having as much pleasure with that simple toy as if It had been the electric train of a boy born with a gold spoon in his mouth. And some of us are not happy until we get a 14-room house, two cars and a station wagon! ir Alvarez Snrltii Emeritus Consultant In Medicine, Mayo Clinic Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Mavo Foundation The cutest and most beautiful child I saw was a little black eyed girl of five who was kneel ing with her Indian father on the floor of the great cathedral in the capital city. The Indian felt so unworthy that he had re mained some 20 or 40 feet away from the altar where about 100 people were hearing Mass. The cute little girl was looking around at everything with such wonderment in her lovely eyes. How I wished I could take a pic ture of her and her father and the whole scene it was so mov ing. Many persons in this world are unsung heroes and heroines. One day 1 chatted with the very pleasant young woman who was cleaning up in my hotel room. She was obviously much more intelligent and well-born than any of the other maids I had seen. I asked her how she hap pened to be working as a maid, and she said that her father, who once had a good-sized business, had befriended a young man and had given him employment. Later, when the father caught him stealing from the till, he had had to let him go. With this the young man because enraged; he secured a gun and shot his old benefactor dead. Faces Problem After this, little Maria, at the age of 9, had to face the problem of helping her mother and her several sisters to live in a coun try in which, at that time, few provisions had been made for the helping of widows and father less children. The girl told me that she much wanted to go to a business college to learn to be a secretary, but she kept work ing as a maid in order to make enough money to put her three younger sisters through school. Only when the sisters were old enough to get by on their own, would she go to college. It was wonderful to see her so merry and happy. She wasn't sorry for herself, and apparently it had never occurred to her that she was a bit of a heroine, or that she was doing anything com mendable. Like all wise persons, she was doing well the work that she had found close to her hands. Another heroine I chatted with was a sweet woman who slept at night under the little sidewalk newsstand from which she got her meager living during the day. With her was her 2-months-old baby! Her alcoholic husband had deserted her. (Released by Tho Register and Tribune Syndicate, 1956) New Figure Shows Victims of Steamer Provincetown, Mass. U.PJ It took 58 years of patient re search to find out just how many persons died when the steam er Portland sank off Cape Cod during a blizzard. (U.R) Eight, tenths of all wild rice marketed in the United States each year is harvested in Minnesota. Although it now sells for as much as S2.50 a pound, the In dian delicacy only recently has become favored by the white man. It usually is served at the holiday season with pheasant, wild duck, turkey or venison. As early as the 1870's wild rice was shipped from Minne sota, but for seed not food, the State Historical Society reported. Sportsmen bought the seed to plant in lakes and swamps as food for waterfowl. In 1876 a Boston seed comp any advertised "wild rice for sale for such as wish to plant it."
