Elmo Smith would be violating his oath of office if he failed to fill a- va cancy on the Oregon Supreme Court before Gov.-elect Robert Holmes takes office. Wyatt spoke in reply to a sug gestion by State Democratic Chairman Robert Boyer who asked that Gov. Smith refrain from making a "lame duck" ap pointment to the Supreme Court. The vacancy was created last week with the death of Justice Walter Tooze. .Wyatt said Boyer's proposal 'violates the spirit and the let ter of the constitution and I feel tha he will wihdraw it after further consideration." Worthy, who represents the Baltimore weekly magazine Afro-American, went to Red China through Hong Kong last Monday. While in Hong Kong. Worthy told newsmen he was willing to make himself a test case of the State Department ruling that American correspondents could not accept Communist Chinese visas, at least not before all prisoners are released by the Communists. The first two launching-type earth satel lites, which resemble gold-plated beach balls, will be delivered to the naval research laboratory within a week. Within a year the laboratory is expected to be ready to fire a .three-stage rocket which will carry such satellites 300 miles to the edge of outer space. 240 Revolutions a Minute If everything works as planned, the tiny satellite will be kicked out of the third-stage rocket, and spinning at 240 revo lutions per minute, will start rotating around the earth every few hours for up to a year. The firing of the first satel- Oregon Development Survey Under Attock Portland XU.F) Sen. Richard L. Neuberger today attacked a $30,000 survey published by the Oregon Development commis sion for its failure to consider the role of lost-cost power in the state's industrial life. Neuberger claimed the report, called "Evaluation of Industrial Opportunities for Oregon," had been "stacked" in favor of pri vate power interests and would be "an albatross around the necks of our senators and con gressmen when they seek 'ow cost federal power projects to create new payrolls for Oregon." The Portland Democrat also asserted that the project leader of the Stanford Research Insti tute, who prepared what the Senator called "this amazing document," has just been hired as the executive secretary of the Oregon Development commis sion. It will also climax the project, called "Operation Vanguard," announced by President Eisen hower in July, 1955. Russia has announced a simi lar project. While the U.S. gov ernment denies any race with the USSR to launch the first satellite, the U.S. firms which have the rocket and satellite con tracts feel the competition and each hopes the launching will take place as close to next July 1 as possible. The building of the satellite itself, a 20-inch diameter sphere which will weight only 21 pounds ' when loaded with its delicate reporting instruments, is only a minor part of the task. The satellite is being built here by Brooks & Perkins, Inc., magnesium processing and fabri cating firm. The models being delivered now are ninnbers three and four completed by the firm. Must Be Tried and Tested "This is a research program, and that means everything has to be tried and tested from scratch," said James S. Kirk patrick. vice president in charge of research and development. "Models one and two wcrt sub jected to static, centrifugal force and strength tests. Numbers three and four will probably be given heat absorption, reflection and cosmic ray tests, among others, as well as more strength and spin tests with instruments fastened inside." The beach ball-size satellites many will eventually be launched will be loosed at 18, 000 miles per hour 300 miles up. They will be thrown in an elliptical path, coming within 200 to 1,500 miles from earth, and varying from 40 degrees north to 40 degrees south latitude. The most beautiful girls in the world are not found behind the footlights they're still on the farms, punching typewriters, running elevators and selling men's fur nishings in department stores. I have just completed casting for the "George White Scandals of 1957." I will open the show tonight at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. This is the first "Scan dais" show since 1942, and I have gone about casting the showgirls as I did in 1920. Help Wanted I advertised In the classified sections of New York and Los Angeles newspaper under the column marked "help wanted female." More than 300 girls showed up on the interview day, each one virtually a beauty. And, I'll bet that some 300 bosses, on that day, were notified that their beautiful girl employees had to attend grandmother's funeral. Each of them had been employed in one of the non-show business jobs most women hold today. If I had placed that ad in a theatrical trade journal I doubt if there would have been six girls who looked fresh enough or beautiful enough for my show. Somehow girls who are already in the theatrical world seem jaded and show a lack of inter est in what they term a routine chorus job. The non-professionals are eag er to make good and are con scientious about their first job in the world of glamor. When the "Scandals" opens in Las Vegas, I will present 18 beau tiful girls not just four or five showgirls as most night clubs are featuring. And none of these 18 girls will dance. They'd Rather Ogle The world today seems over ly dance conscious. Or, I should say, producers are dance con scious.
