By EZRA TAFT BENSON Secretary of Agriculture Written for United Press Better times are ahead for American farmers. Net farm income ro.e slightly in 19S6 after a long downward silde. The prospect is for furth er increase in 1957. Prices received by farmers, now running ahead of a year ago. are expected to average higher in 1957 than in 1956. During this present marketing year, surplus stocks of cotton, rice and ,wheat are being re duced. We appear to have pass ed the peak of government hold ings of farm products. Record Output Total farm output in 1958 was a record high. With the soil bank in full swing next year. Winter Will Officially Start at 1 p.m. Friday By FAY BENTLEY Better get out your warm woolens. Old Man Winter is just around the corner waiting to subdue us with his icy breath. "I think he has already ar rived," I can hear someone say in. Judging by the recent weath er he does seem a bit ahead of schedule. However, according to "the powers that be" autumn is still here and will remain with us until Dec. 21. at 1 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. At that hour, winter will come blustering up on the stage. Around the Sun As our planet pursues Its yearly course around the nin, it appears to earth-dwellers that the sun is noving around the earth. This was the generally accepted belief until after 1610 when Galileo began sky obser vations through crude telescopes of his own making. Even then people were very- reluctant to believe that the earth was not in the center of our solar system. Doesn't the sun rise in the east in the morning, journey across the sky all day, and at night sink from sight beneath the western horizon?" they wanted know. Turns Eastward The earth turning eastward on its axis makes the sun appear to travel towards the west, just as the trees seem to go down the highway in the opposite direc tion from which we are driving. The same principle applies to the earth's yearly revolution. While in reality our planet is constantly traveling around the sun, to inhabitants of this terrestrial sphere old Sol ap pears to encirle our globe. Because the earth is tilted at an angle of 23 V4 degrees from the perpendicular (line straight up and down), the sun is ap parently north of the equator for six months, then crosses this imaginary line around the cent er of the earth and is south of the equator for six months. ADDRESS City or Town.... . Thunday, December 20, 1958 this volume should come down. The foreign market took near ly a fifth more farm products in 1955-56 marketing years. A record export volume is in pros pect for 1956-57. Population continues to grow. Consumer incomes are expected to rise further in the coming year. The domestic market for farm products is expected to be strong in the year ahead. Prices of articles farmers buy may creep up somewhat during 1957, particularly for manufac tured items. But with acreage reductions under the soil bank program, total production costs may change little. Total receipts are expected to rise and result in an increase in net income. Hog prices are expected to average higher than in 1956. Cattle slaughter will probably be much much the same as in 1956, with no marked price change expected. process has been repeated since the beginning of time. Autumn Begins Autumn begins, on the auttlm nal equinox or the day the sun crosses from the northern to the southern side of the equator, usually on or near Sept. 23. The vernal equinox on or near March 21 marks the first day of spring. Approximately half way be tween the September and March equinoxes the solstices occur; the winter solstice, marking the first day of winter, and the sum mer solstice which signifies the beginning of our summer. At the time of the solstices, the sun has reached its . most distant point either north or south of the equator and begins its journey back toward cross ing the imasinary line. Winter Solstice This year the winter solstice will occur Dec. 21, at 1 p.m. when the northern half of the earth will have reached its great est angle of inclination away from the sun. The North Pole will have been in darkness for three months and will remain in darkness for three more months. For everyone living on the northern side of the equator, winter will have arrived, but for residents of the southern hemisphere, summer is just be ginning. Solstice means "sun-still." After reaching the point most distant from the equator, the sun apparently stands still for a few days before starting on the return trip. Hence, the name, solstice, was given by ancient people to designate this day. Use Tribune Want Ads Low in Cost! i Quick in Results!
