Mrs. Pierce Confessed Arsonist Breaks Info Tears Trenton, N.J. (U.R) Elber C. Lucas who pleaded guilty to arson for setting four church fires here, broke into tears when he was charged with murder in another church blaze in which three people died. Judge Albert Cooper entered a plea of innocent to three mur der counts for the 40-year-old handyman, who confessed toss ing homemade "Molotov cock tails" into four churches last Sunday and then going to wor ship in his own church. Lucas 'was held without bail for mental examinations and ac tion by the Grand Jury. The murder charges grew out of a S3.5 million blaze which gutted St. Mary's Roman Catho lic Cathedral and rectory here last March. The Very Rev. Msgr. Richard Crean and two house keepers died in the fire. Lucas' confession climaxed an investigation begun Sunday when almost simultaneous fires in four churches, including the historic First Methodist Church, were linked to the St. Mary's fire. Lucas was picked up while loitering near the flame-damaged church and confessed setting the fires. Argentina Expropriates Radioactive Minerals Buenos Aires OI.R) The Argentine government has ex propriated all privately-owned deposits of radioactive minerals. An executive decree issued Wednesday by the provisional government placed sole owner ship and control of Argentina's nuclear resources in the hands of the National Atomic Energy Commission. Owners of the de posits may enter into exploita tion contracts with the commis sion, the sole buyer of atomic ores in Argentina. Hebrew University Admits First Non-Jew Jerusalem. Israel (U.R) The Hebrew University here has ad mitted the first non-Jewish stu dent in its 31-ycar history a German it was announced to day. The student is blond Eva Bel ing. 25. of Hamburg, who is pre paring a thesis on the integation of German Jews in Israel for her doctorate in sociology. Miss Bel ing previously studied at Frank furt's Goethe University and the Sorbonne in Paris. Influenza Epidemic Continues in Japan Tokyo U.R) An influenza epidemic, described as the worst in post-war Japan, continued to spread through the thickly-populated areas of the country today with no signs of letting up. In the Tokyo area alone. 47 of the 241 schools have suspend ed classes. A welfare ministry spokesman estimated that 150, 000 children were sick with the flu throughout the country. Thursday. December 20, 1956 PT&T Witnesses Cross-Examined Salem (U.R) Pacific Tele phone and Telegraph Co., wit nesses were cross-examined at a hearing on the company's pro posed seven per cent rate in creases here yesterday. John R. McCulIough, attorney for the state Public Utilities Commission, conducted the cross examination of F. A. Dresslar. Portland, Oregon Manager of PT&T, and other company offi cers. McCulIough contended that the company did not need such a large increase to put in sound position, although he admitted the accuracy of company figures. PT&T now gets 5.3 per cent returns on its investment and wants a 6.73 return. McCulIough suggested a re turn of from 6 to 6.2 per cent, which would mean a rate boost of about $2 million. The company said at a hear ing here two weeks ago that it needed S3, 200. 000 to finance a S15.i million expansion program in the next four years. Lie Test Planned In Slaying Quiz Chicago (U.R) Police today planned a lie detector test for an alcoholic machinist who ad mitted taking part in the slaying of three Chicago boys and then retracted his confession when he sobered up. Erwin Staab, 32, wound up a three-day drunk Wednesday by stumbling into a police sta tion to tell officers he was pres ent when two drinking com panions murdered the youths the night of Oct. 16, 1935. The murder of John Schues sler. 13, his brother, Anton. 11, and Robert Peterson. 13, touch ed off one of the most intensive manhunts in Chicago history. Staab dictated a three-page question and answer statement to authorities during hours of questioning. Police, who have run into a blank wall after months of investigation, called the confession "as hot as any thing we've had in this case." Authorities then gave Staab a tranquilizing drug and when he awoke four hours later, he recanted the statement and ex plained "I just talk that way when I'm drunk." . "We are going to let him rest kas long as he wishes, with the hope that he can tell a clear story later today," Morris said. Mickey Rooney Faces Lawsuit for $7,500 Hollywood (U.R! Actor Mickey Rooney today faced a S7.500 suit filed by a Beverly Hills law firm which charged him with refusing to pay a bill. Attorneys James J. Needle man. J. George Gold and Harry M. charged Wednesday that the actor refused to pay for legal services allegedly provided be tween March 1, 1955, and last Sept. 18, 1956. Acquaintances I Mussolini's Son Flees To Italy Buenos Aires ;U.R' Vittorio Mussolini,-eldest son of the late Italian dictator, w-s reported to day to have fled to Italy to es cape arrest on charges stemming from financial manipulations of the Juan D. Peron dictatorship. Mussolini disappeared from Buenos Aires four days before Judge Arturo Camp ordered his arrest. Mussolini and several oth er persons were charged with re ceiving sums of money illegally from the Buenos Aires Province Jockey Club. Family friends denied Musso lini had left the country.
