EIGHT MIFORO (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Monday. December 17, 1958 Larson Discusses Republicanism Of Eisenhower in Recent Book A. WOtfSRT SMITH fil Tribune Correspondent Washington Arthur Larson. tt new head of th U.S. Infor mation Agency, which includes o Off"V'3lC;"if tne Voice of 9 ,i 'i.4eVl America hal' a 1 ready prov ed himself to be one of this country's more art iculate in terpreters an a b i lity which "should eerve him weir in his important new assignmrajt. Larson proved it .jpainly in his recent book, "A Republican Loo) at His Parry," in which he tries fo define the New RepublicareisrS of Presi dent Eisenhower and to argue thg it it a political philosophy W Zy- IfV Hi Knit miu which is here to stay. The re-election of Eisenhower makes this book more significant than ever, for it has been read approvingly by the president himself and is, therefore, prob ably the best handbook now in print of what the president and his "New Republican associates are striving for in government. Subjective Account It is. of course, a subjective account, for Larson was a mem ber of the Eisenhower team as labor undersecretary when he wrote the book. Its publication just prior to the fall election campaign put it into the political tract category. Nevertheless, It is a very meaty tract, full of contentions wliich most Democrats and many Republicans would not accept. It is largely an expres ion of the liberal element in the GOP which, if it would ad mit it. feels more uncomfortable with the doctrines of William McKinley than those of Franklin D. Roosevelt. And yet the New Republican ism, Larson argues, is not just the New Deal dressed in a new double-breasted business suit. "The humanitarian ideas of the New Deal were praiseworthy and have been rightly emulated; the economic ideas were bad, and have been rightly discard ed," he says. For this reason, the Eisenhow er administration has extended social security instead of repeal ing it; but it has dropped many restrictions on business instead them, because it i v a t e enterprise of extending believes "p r snould be released and encour aged as the proved motive force of our economy." He says the New Deal mistakenly thought production had reached a peak and that faulty distribution was the thing government had to correct Heftiest Contention Probably the heftiest conten tion to swallow is this: "It is the genius of the Eisen hower administration's achieve ment that it has merged and brought into balance all the posi tive forces in our country. It is not against any of them. It real izes that they sometimes conflict, but it has found a way to en courage them to work together to a common benefit." He illustrates this by saying that the government of McKin ley's day was against organ ized labor, and the administra tion of Roosevelt in 1936 was against business. "This adminis tration is against neither, but is for both," Larson declares. To boil down Larson's entire argument, it is that the genius of the New Republicanism is that it has found the precise cen ter of the political spectrum at a time when the American peo ple had simultaneously discov ered great comfort in following the middle way. Looking Ahead Looking ahead to 1960, when the magic of Eisenhower's per sonality will not be available on the GOP ticket, Larson thinks "the Republicans have a strong chance of staying in power as representatives of the great ma jority of the voters" if they have "candidates who represent the New Republicanisms, while Dem ocratic spokesmen are obliged to attack from one extreme posi tion or another." On the other hand, if the Re publicans were to put up a presi dential candidate "identified with an extreme conservative position" and the "Democrats were to seize that moment to choose a nominee ho took over, the formula of the great middle way, the Dniocratic candidate would almost certainly win." This is based on the question able contention by Larson that Q "in politics as In chess the manwho hglds t!(e cgritercjiold a position cf almost unbeatable strength." "When you are working every week on television, you Aline Mosb7 don't have the time to assess your personal life or figure out wbere you're go ing or what your values are," explained the slender, song-and-dance man. "That's why I quit TV two years ago. O Connor made a "comeback" on Sunday's NBC Dinah Shore show his first TV appearance since he ended his filmed series two years ago, and his first live TV show in three years. The va cation he took from the home screens gave him a breathing spell to catch up with his life. Got Married His accomplishments: .He got married: he wrote a symphonic suite that will be performed next month by a local doctors' orchestra at a public concert; he starred in three pictures and turned 'dramatic actor in "The Buster Keaton Story." "I had to give up TV because I reached the point where I was putting more into the show than I. was gefting out of it," he ex plained. "People who are just singers, or comics, or dancers, have it hard enough. It's even tougher when you have to combine all three." Plans Two Musicals Now that he has a happy per sonal life and has cut loose from "playing straight man to a mule in. the "Frances' series," O'Con nor figures it's time to return to television. He next plans to star in two musical "spectaculars" and will try his hand on a straight dramatic show. Next year the one-time boy hoofer plans to film a screen plsy a serious story to match his new expression that he wrote once he got out of the squirrel cage of his regular film ed television series. His sym phonic suite would be used as a background score, he added. "Everybody should slow down and look over his life now and then," he said. "Sometimes you don't realize that you're not doing the things you want, or retting what you expected out of life, until you stop the regu lar routine. "I wouldn't have even talked or thought about getting mar ried if I'd still been doing that re&ular TV show this year. ft?ad and Use Classified Ads The Lav Cost Way to Sell Avoid a Last Minute Holiday Rush!
