The Unit ; ed States is reported to have I asked Syria to let the West re : pair the sabotaged oil pipeline running from Iraq through Syria. Informed sources said the re- j quest was made recently in Da- ! mascus. They said Syria s reply has not rrarhed Washington vet. Exports estimate that the pipe- line could be restored to handle between 30 and 40 per cent of its capacity in about two months. Ballot Title Given Tax Commission Act Salem i'U.Pj An initiative petition that would limit to ad visory only the powers of the State Tax Commission in the valuation or assessment of prop erty was given a ballot title and descriptive summary today by the attorney general's office. At the same time, the State elections Bureau sent out the first petitions for circulation to Frank I. Kinney, Eugene, spon sor of the initiative. County assessors now assess property under supervision of the State Tax Commission. Kinney must obtain 38,514 signatures before July 1958 in order to get the measure on the 1958 general election ballot. The proposed measure, titled '"limiting powers of State Tax Commission" was described: "Tp limit supervisory powers of State Tax Commission over county tax officials in the valu ation and assessment of proo erty, in securing uniformity of assessment and equality of taxa tion, to advising and assisting such officials. Repeals joint state-county property tax re appraisal program. Repeals pro cedure for state administrative and judicial review of acts and omissions of property tax of ficials. Logging Firms Charged With Fire Responsibility Salem 4U.P.) Oregon Pulp and Paper Company, Salem, has sued two logging firms and a lumber company for $730,811, alleging they were responsible for the 15.000-acre Sardine creek forest fire above Detroit dam in 1951. Feeding the Family By ZOLA Food Gourmet Seasoning Tricks For Holiday Vegetables More entertaining will be done in the next few weeks than at any other time of the year... So, naturally, you want to serve your guests food that will make them say, ' How did you get this wonderful flavor?" This is par ticularly flattering when the ever-present vegetable is being praised. Modern recipes usually tell you how much seasoning to use, but since they are designed for the majority, or "average" tastes use you own judgement as to how much to use . . .keeping in mind that rarely should the sea j soning be decreased. Here are some suggestions for spicing-up your holiday vegetables. Broccoli with Brown Butter nut Sauce. To give this a real Christmasy appearance decorate with slivers of piminento. Com bine three tablespoons melted butter or margarine with two tablespoons chopped butternuts or other nuts of your choice. Saute until butter is lightly browned. Add one-sixteenth tea spoon grated nutmeg, one-sixteenth teaspoon ground allspice (optional) and salt and pepper to taste. Pour over li pounds hot cooked broccoli. Cabbage with Whole Caraway Seed. Shred one medium head cabbage. Place in saucepan with one-half inch boiling water and one-half teaspoon salt. Cover. Cook, quickly just until tender, removing lid once or twice to allow gases to escape. Drain. Add three-fourth teaspoon crushed whole marjoram leaves two ta blespoons butter and one tea spoon whole caraway seed. Serve hot. Sprinkle with chopped pi miento or a dash of paprika to give it that festive look. Spinach with Nutmeg. Put cooked spinach through the grinder; add a little stock and nutmeg and thicken ever so light ly in the re-heating. Make tiny cubes or day-old bread. Fry them in bacon drippings or othef fat, drain and sprinkle over the pureed spinach. Fried Green Pepper Rings. Truly something to remember. Cut rings about half an inch thick. Season well with salt and paprika, coat lightly with flour and fry until tender. VINCENT Editor Scalloped Potatoes Oregano. I Always party-popular Scalloped ! Season cooked carrots with butter, salt, pepper and a dash of cinnamon or cloves for something delect able. j Many Christmas Uses j For Aluminum Foil ! Christmas wrapping time is upon us. . .particularly of those packages that must "travel." So here are some suggestions utiliz ing our year-around kitchen helper, inexpensive, glistening aluminum foil for packaging and for beautiful Christmas decora tions. Foil will dramatize im portant gifts, make modest ones look impressive. Aluminum Foil Foibles Aluminum foil is fine "as is" but it is even more interesting when crushed, pleated or ham mered for package wrappings and for decorations. For soft effect, crush foil by crumpling very gently first in one direc tion and then in the other. For pleating, press together, using medium hot iron, two sheets of foil with waxed paper between. This gives strength. . smoothness and body to foil and makes it easy to use. For pearly effect, press one sheet of foil with waxed paper. Arrange in any width pleat desired. For hand-hammered effect use eraser end of pencil, pressing and twist ing gently into foil surface. Good for edging and for design-making. Package Wrapping, Decorating Ieas Cut out foil initials, mon ograms, silhouettes and paste them on gift boxes. Roll a bottle of toilet water or a lipstick in a piece of foil, bring ends together at top, press firmly, cut ends into fringed tassel. Make pert little pouches for candy, dainty envelopes for hankies, nylons or gift checks. Spread foil under a lace table cloth it catches the glimmer of candlelight; protects your table, too. Cut cardboard stars, angels, Santa Claus or other traditional Christmas shapes and cover both sides with foil. . .hang on tree or use as window-shade pulls. Arrange gay table centerpiece by using crushed foil either alone or in a shallow bowl. Add greens, colored tree ornaments, candles. Spread shimmering foil under tree. Non-flamable, it molds per fectly into hills, caves. Add greens, artificial snow, figurines. It protects the floor and reflects lights beautifully. Make snowflake reflectors for tree lights . . .Fold three inch squares of foil in four, cut out hole for center, designs on side. I Unfold, place around light socket, press firmly, screw in bulb. Fill Your Market Basket With Food for Christmas Giving Groceries make fine gifts, caster to gourmet appetites, flat ter the recipient because of your awareness of their special lik ing for cheese, for fine fruits, or perhaps lor fancy fish and shellfish, smoked poultry or oth er food specialties. For the cheesa lover an assortment of softer types such as Leiderkranz, Cam embert, Limburger, Roquefort andor Bleu will be remembered long into 1957. For family giv ing, particularly for families with numerous progeny, noth ing beats an assortment of fresh, dried or candied fruits. Sweet jucy winter pears, Bosc, Anjou and Cornice, will be on their best behaviour during the holidays. Dates stuffed with nuts and roll ed in powdered sugar are always a treat. But, then, fresh Calif ornia dates are delightful in any form. Fill a nut bowl with a selection of seasonal west coast crop of walnuts, filberts, almonds or whatever. Don't forget to in clude a nutcracker. So. . .shop your grocery store and you'll probably come up with some wonderful and thoughtful gift ideas. While you're about it, you might pick up a couple of rolls of metal foil for easy elegant wrapping. Cook Books are always a wel come gift for today's busy home- maker. Consider any of the many fine west coast cook books usual ly offered in a special depart ment at your book store. For instance with outdoor cookery increasing in popularity you might like "The Complete Book of Outdoor Cookery" by Helen Evans Brown and James Beard We found it full of new ideas. Fruit Buys. Fresh, tart cran berries are just right. Pears, to be bought firm then ripened at home, are in good supply. A variety of crisp, juicy apples both red and yellow are of good quality and price. California dates, the candy that grows on trees, are plentiful and reason able. A wide choice of seasonal nuts and of dried and candied fruits for holiday baking are well priced. Bananas, citrus fruits and grapes continue at reasonable prices. Vegetable Buys.
