Airmen Due Training In City Wrecking Ballistic Missiles Washington (U.R) The Air Force next month will start training airmen in hour to fire city wrecking ballistic missiles which, are destined to revolu tionize air-atomic warfare,,' It probably, will be sever years, however, before the air men will have the actual weSpoS in hand. The Air Force announced late Wednesday that it will establish a training base on the West Coast for ballistic missile units. "The training center will be located af Camp Cooke, Lompoc.oCalif ., an inactive Army base which will be transferred to Air Force con trol. o To Occupy in January The Air Force will start occu pying the base in January and gradually build up to a 3,090 to 4,000-man strength. The "con templated manpower is an indi cation that the base willbe the Air Force's principal cdhter for training the ballistic missilemen of the future. The base wilJ be under tfie su pervision of Maj Gen.QB. A. Schriever, commander of the Air Research and Development C8m mand's Western Developing Cen ter. The ballistic missiles avill travel 1,500 to 5,000 iniles in a matter of minutes and demolish their targets with hydrogen bomb warheads. Though the Air Force is ahput to start- training balstic mis silemen, officials captioned this does, not mean the weapon is now roedy. It probably will be several years before the fanVs 'tic weapons are completely de veloped a,nd ready for operation al use. The action dees indicate, how ever, that ballistic missile cfcvoi opment is far enough" along for the Air Force to start thinking about the mei who will fire the weapon. By opening the training center now, training will be able to proceed hand in hand vith development of the complex rocket. Ballistics missiles will not ac tually be fired fron Camp Cooke, according to Air Force plans, but there wil1 be static test firings of the jjuge rocket engines.
