"There are no dancing girls in grass skirts," he said, "but there are also no income taxes." Strand Warns of Over-Emphasis In Science, Math Portland f(j.R) Dr. A. L. Strand, president of Oregon tate College, appearing before a meeting of the State Board of Higher Education yesterday, said there is danger that the heavy emphasis on science and mathe matics in this country "is getting out of hand." Strand was before the board to explain a $253,000 grant Ore gon State has received for su perior science and mathematics performance. And while warning of the dan gers of over-emphasis in the two fields, Dr. Strand proudly out lined the National Science foundation grant. One of II Schools Oregon State was one of 11 universities and colleges in the country to be chosen for the spe cial teacher-training project de signed to improve science and mathematics teaching in second ary schools. Under the program, 50 select ed high school teachers will be sent to Oregon State for one year by the foundation with S3000 grants plus family tuition allow ances. "We believe this is important so we go along with it," Dr. Strand said. "But we want it known that we think other fields deserve emphasis and help also." Pearson, Portland, the Demo crats' choice for president of the evenly divided state Senate, an nounced here yesterday that his party has turned thumbs down on a Republican compromise proposal under which the Re publicans would organize the Senate. Pearson said the 15 Demo cratic members of the chamber had voted unanimously to re ject the Republican proposal. He said they voted to give Re publicans a share in control of all legislation outside four major committees. The Republicans earlier had proposed that their candidate for Senate president. Warren Gill of Lebanon, be installed but that chairmanships of the taxation and ways and means committees go to the Democrats.
