Dtninlir 1J. 1938 Un-American Committee Sets Seattle Hearings San Francisco !U.P; The House Un-American Activities Subcommittee left today for Se attle and further hearing in its investigation of Communism in the United States. The Seattle hearings are sched uled for Thursday and Friday. The committee concluded its San Francisco hearings Tuesday. Highlight of the San Francisco phase of the committee's investi gation was the ejection of Louis Gnldfalatt, secretary-treasurer of the International Longshore men's and Warehousemen's Un ion, from he hearing room. Escorted To Door Goldblatt was escorted to the door by U. S. marshals, in com pany with Salle Soladay, Uni versity of California student who I loudly applauded when he called the committee's director a "two I bit publicity hound." I Goldblatt was referring to 1 Richard Arens. who had asked if : Goldblatt were the "Lew Miller" : who was the author of a pro- Communist pamphlet published j 22 years ago. At the demand of fans, CBS-TV is running for the third sea- Aline Motbj son its 90-min-ute filmed musical version of the famous story. Fredric March and Basil Rathbone are stars of the presentation Thursday eve ning. And, as if one good show calls for another, NBC-TV is staging the same Dickens' story on Dec. 23 also as a musical. If this show looks familiar, it may be because Basil Rathbone. the Marley's ghost in the CBS ver sion, will be seen as Scrooge cn NBC. Singers In NBC Version The NBC musical, re-named "The Stingiest Man in Town," also will star real singers Patrice Munsel, Vic Damone and Johnny Desmond. The CBS show was made two years ago by producer-director Ralph Levy, who took the idea to the network because he want ed to try something more serious than his Jack Benny program. He graciously says he doesn't mind that NBC is musicalizins "Christmas Carol," too. "More power to 'em," he said. "We've been doing our version longer. Besides, I'm sure they'll have a different treatment. 1 must say I don't approve of pop- Hatfield's Senate Successor Named. Salem (U.R) Sidney Schles inger, 38. a Salem businessman, was appointed as the new Mar ion county state senator yester day by the county court. Schlcsinger, a past chairman of the Marion county Republican central committee, will replace Secretary of State-elect Mark Hatfield who resigned. Purists Pacified The idea of setting Dickens' story to music at first appalled the purists. After the first CBS showing of "A Christmas Carol" on "Showers of Stars" the spon sor raked in "several thousand letters." Some were laudatory, others complaining. "But the rating was good so the show was run again last year, and we received even more letters of praise," Levy said. The program will be hclfl at 8 p.m., in the circuit courtroom in the county courthouse. Lamb will discuss costs of cor rection for juveniles at state and county levels. He, will also ex plain proposed legislation con cerning state schools and juve nile courts and will answer ques tions concerning MacLaren school. .
